Joe Frisaro of MLB.com says that Florida Marlins’ Wes Helms has caught the attention of the New York Yankees. Helms would bring a versatile third baseman, first baseman, designated hitter and pinch hitter to the Yankee’s roster. Additionally he has playoff experience with the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies.
A number of scouts, including the Yankees’, are on hand in Miami to watch the Marlins take on the Nationals.
The 12-year veteran is hitting .243/.298/.391 in 63 games for the Marlins this season. He is a free agent after the season, and Frisaro says he could come back to the Marlins organization. The club is high on Helms and he is comfortable being a veteran on a young team.
