The Bucs have taken home a bunch of awards over the last few two weeks or so, but the last and biggest comes tonight at 6 PM on MLB Network. Andrew McCutchen is a finalist for the NL Most Valuable Player award, and it seems likely he’ll be the first Pirate to win it since Barry Bonds in ’92. The other two finalists are Yadier Molina and Paul Goldschmidt, both of whom have decent cases. Goldschmidt had the best offensive year of the three, while Molina provided his usual enormous value as a catcher plus a big season at the plate. Cutch has a little bit of everything going for him, though – he led the league in WAR (the best attempt to measure overall value), his offensive stats are great, his defense was solid (at a key position), and he was the superstar, centerpiece, and main building block for the Pirates’ storybook season that ended in a playoff berth. Other notes: Clayton Kershaw took home the NL Cy Young, obviously. Francisco Liriano got one fourth plate vote and one fifth place vote, placing him tenth overall. Full results are here. Some clown from Cincinnati voted Wainwright first, preventing Kershaw from winning unanimously. Jay Bell discussed his move to take the Reds bench coach job. He clearly has a good relationship with new Cincinnati Bryan Price, which is probably a key reason he’s headed there. Gregory Polanco update: he’s now hitting .328 with a 1.041 OPS in the Dominican League.
