The worst-case scenario basically happened. Two days after the NHL sent a proposal calling for a 50-50 split in revenue to the NHLPA, both sides met Thursday in Toronto. The union sent three counterproposals to the league, but all three were rejected in a matter of minutes. “It’s clear that we’re not speaking the same language,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. “I am concerned that we’re not progressing” “This is the best offer that we have to make,” Bettman said of the league’s proposal. “The fact is, we’re nowhere close to what we proposed.” Bettman would go on to say that no new talks have been scheduled. NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr said that the NHL had proposed to cut player salaries by 12.3 percent; something that the players don’t consider fair. “The players offered to make real concessions in terms of reducing their share of HRR, with some small degree of protection,” Fehr said. “The players don’t see any reason to take less in terms of dollars.” Feh

Mike Augello: Optimism Dashed; Bettman Rejects Three PA Counter-Proposals

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman emerged from meetings with the NHLPA in Toronto this afternoon and summarily squelched any optimism for a quick resolution to the NHL lockout, The players submitted three counter offers to the proposal that the league submitted on Tuesday and Bettman was quick to respond that none of the three were acceptable and represented a step backwards in the negotiations.....

Gary Bettman Is A Snake

Gary Bettman is a snake. The NHL has had such a resurgence the past couple of years, especially in New England, where the Bruins have experienced months of being the favorite major sports team in the region. Ten years ago, ish, the Bruins were so far below the Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics that it was sometimes easy to forget that they even existed. But an exciting team and a Stanley...

Diary of a Mad NHL Fan: Part Four

(Image courtesy of theprovince.com) Apparently, the player’s union has indeed come up with not one, not two, but three counter-proposals as talks resumed today in New York. And guess what? Gary Bettman rejected all of them. My hope meter is non-existent so I won’t be bothering with that anymore. Let me break down exactly where The post Diary of a Mad NHL Fan: Part Four appeared...

Not so fast - NHLPA and NHL Owners no closer to a deal

English: NHL Commisioner Gary Bettman in 2007. (Photo credit: Wikipedia) On Tuesday the NHL owners put forth another proposal for a new CBA – shortly thereafter there was a lot of excitement that finally we might get an NHL season. Donald Fehr came out on Tuesday and said, "Simply put, the owners' new proposal, while not quite as Draconian as their previous proposals...

If They Really Love Our Game

from David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail, This is the week we’ll discover if all those people on both sides of the NHL lockout love hockey as much as they promise while holding the game for ransom. Thursday may be yet another deadline imposed only by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and the owners as the final day to save a full 82-game season but unlike the Sept. 15 one...

Optimism lost in NHL labor talks

The NHL and the players' association agree on one thing: Thursday was a bad day at the negotiating table. ''Thoroughly disappointed,'' NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman...

Make sure to follow Travis on Twitter! -- One of the most fascinating parts of these CBA negotiations is the ongoing battle between commissioner Gary Bettman and union leader Donald Fehr. I suspect it's not a popular thing to say to thousands of hockey fans who have learned to loathe the faces of the men who have stripped the National Hockey League away, but this chess-game...

Down To Crunch Time For The NHL

from Scott Burnside of ESPN, And so it comes down to this: a week, maybe less, to not just save a season but a game's reputation; to save the reputation of its players and owners and to disprove the widely held notion -- one that grows by the day -- that hockey will just never get it right. Less than a week to prove that hockey isn't the crazy, drooling uncle of...

You Call This Negotiating In Good Faith?

from Michael Traikos of the National Post, When the meeting between the two sides ended, the players came down and spat insults, if not blood. Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby said it was clear the NHL does not want to negotiate in fairness. Chicago’s Jonathan Toews implied commissioner Gary Bettman could not be trusted. And Phoenix’s Shane Doan added it feels like the owners...
