Today begins the Early Signing Period for NCAA basketball, and the Notre Dame basketball family has added 5 new members. Mike Brey's two big men and Muffet McGraw's elite trio are profiled here.
The Early Signing Period began today, and the commitments in both the men's and women's recruiting classes of 2014 wasted no time in sending their National Letters of Intent to the Joyce Center. The five players profiled below fill major needs for their respective teams and make up strong classes in the inaugural ACC season for Notre Dame.
Mike Brey and his men's hoops program needed some big men in this class, and they delivered with the East coast duo of Bonzie Colson and Martin Geben:
PF Bonzie Colson - 6'5" - Barrington, RI - I profiled Colson here at the time of his commitment and think he has a very high ceiling for the Irish. He has had one of the best years in the country on the prep scene and, despite his short stature, brings a very developed, well-rounded game on both ends of the court. He needs to get into "college" shape, but once he does, I think he has all-ACC potential.
PF Martin Geben - 6'9" - Hagerstown, MD - Like Colson, I profiled Geben here when he committed. I likened his game to Rob Kurz, which is as high a compliment as I can give. He looks like he will fill a stretch 4 role for Notre Dame, as he brings good vision and shooting touch while maintaining a willingness on the boards. As a class, Geben and Colson compliment each other really well and bring different but very valuable and surprisingly developed skill sets to the power forward position.
Congrats to Coach Brey and the men who will soon be joining the Notre Dame family!

Want to make BC fans care about a lower-level bowl? Easy solution: just add the Irish. As Brian pointed out in his projections roundup many of the pundits are slotting BC to play Notre Dame in the Independence Bowl. (Obviously this is all predicated on BC becoming bowl eligible.) If BC wants to cap off its first year under Addazio, the best way to do it would be in a postseason...
Football is a violent and dangerous sport. That's a large part of why people love it. At the same time no one wants to see a person injured or hurt so the rules and hence the referees are necessary for the game to be as awesome as we want it to be.
The only problem of course is when they are not applied properly and the misinterpretation of them affects the outcome of the...

Notre Dame’s star defensive tackle Louis Nix may actually be better at Twitter than he is at football, which is saying something. Nix is one of the most beloved members of the Fighting Irish, both for his very outgoing personality and his great sense of humor.
Nix is a senior at Notre Dame, but can opt for a fifth year with the team if he so chooses. Most people believe that there...
Want to know how badly Notre Dame’s football team is beaten up on the injury front? The Irish won’t be practicing during their bye week, despite the team coming off of a demoralizing loss to unranked Pittsburgh. Coach Brian Kelly told reporters the news today, making it clear that this is the first time in his career he’s made such a move.

Notre Dame fans have been playing the “what if” game ever since it was announced in late May that junior quarterback Everett Golson had been suspended from the university for the fall semester due to “poor academic judgment.” If Golson, last year’s starter, had been allowed to play this semester, would the Irish be a lock for...
Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly isn't worried about his team having a lack of motivation for the final two regular-season games.
There's not much at stake for the Fighting Irish (7-3), who were eliminated from a possible BCS bowl berth with a 28-21 loss to Pittsburgh last week. The Irish must now wait to see which conferences are unable to fill all their bowl affiliations....
Pittsburgh Panthers head coach Paul Chryst showed off his hilarious dance moves in the locker room after the team’s win over Notre Dame on Saturday. I’m guessing he didn’t expect to be caught on camera.
A former Florida State signee and Notre Dame offensive lineman, big Jordan Prestwood is coming off a season in junior college and looking to find a home for his final two seasons.
Notre Dame won't practice this week. They can't, unless the plan is to use orthopedic boots, casts, and the team's trainers and doctors that apply them as part of defensive personnel groupings. But head coach Brian Kelly said today his team, especially his seniors, has a singular focus in its 10 days of remaining preparation for Brigham Young on November 23.
Notre Dame offered Montini (Ill.) Catholic senior linebacker Nyle Sykes who talks about it inside.
Pitt looks to build off its momentum from the Notre Dame win. They face a North Carolina team, winners of three in a row.
In his Tuesday afternoon press conference, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly made it readily apparent that the 2013 squad's issues are easy to pinpoint and not necessarily relegated to the lack of a running game or an offensive identity. It's likewise clear these issues can only be corrected by turning the page toward a new season...and protecting the football throughout it.
A starter since the first game of his freshman season, Notre Dame's best player through the first 10 games of 2013 has a message for his younger wide receiver position mates: focus -- before it's too late.
Pittsburgh had a nice collection of prospects on campus for the win against Notre Dame, and several of them shared what stood out during the Saturday unofficial visit.
