With the news about Jim Tressel’s resignation at Ohio State today, Mike Nugent’s sentiments equal those expressed by many former Buckeyes — shock over what has happened but respect for what Tressel did for them during their careers.
During last week’s Marvin Lewis Golf Classic, I asked Nugent what he thought about what has been a turbulent offseason at his alma mater.
“It’s really tough just seeing the little parts I know about. I wish it never happened,” Nugent said. “In the end my biggest thing is are you cheating on the field? I don’t think there was any advantage over anyone on the field but I guess why that’s there are rules and from what it looks like rules were broken.”
Nugent arrived on campus the same year Tressel did — 2001. By the time Nugent’s career ended, he held 22 school records, was the first Buckeye kicker to receive All-America honors and was part of the 2002 National Championship team.
