OFFENSIVE NEEDS

Posted March 23, 2013

THE Eagles only have 8 picks. That said, I’m aware that they can’t use a pick on every one of these positions.  This is just an overview of where those picks would best serve them. The needs are in bold.

QB: Of the Future, but this Draft lacks one, so I’d pass this year. (The Eagles will likely draft one.)

RB: Affichage embarrassant de richesses, is how the French would describe us here.

FB: This is a team that can create mismatches at the FB position. How cool is that!?

WR: Deceptively shallow. We have a contract problem coming up with one of the starters, and with Avant being no lock to return, we’d be left with Benn, Cooper, and McNutt. Any of these guys in the slot is a match-up nightmare, but if we needed one of them to be a starter, no one is going to be afraid of that. It would be wise to draft and squirrel a guy away for 2014.

TE: Sooo deep. So very deep.

OT: Lot of bodies but no depth that can step in and be a plausible starter unless Wang surprises us. We need a guy.

G: Mathis is our best and he’s solid, but solid isn’t dominant. We have no dominant or imposing players inside. That’s a problem. We need a guy.

C: Anybody besides me tired of seeing the C pushed back into the QB a few times per game? If so, we need a guy.

K: I’m admittedly still stinging over Akers being gone, and Henery DOES only seem to miss kicks when it’s important. Still he’s consistent enough. So why invent a problem?

LS: We have a very good guy at this position, but I really think we need to get a back-up who can do this as a second position. You have NO IDEA how much the game can be impacted by repeated bad snaps on kicks and punts. (I watched it last season and it was a horror show.) We don’t need to draft a guy, but we sure as hell need a back-up!

  • Oakland has cleared the way for Geno Smith to be an Eagle.
  • I don't think we're gonna use a FB, a starting RG is needed along with depth thought out the offensive line. A QB of the future would be nice but saying it's a need makes it sounds like we have to get it this year and I'd rather not make it a NEED and reach. Obviously if there's a guy they believe in then I'm all for it. Other then that the WRs aren't shallow this year... next year they might be but who knows what'll happen between now and then.
  • I agree on the RG. My Wish List has us drafting one first. I also agree with you on the QB of the future thing.

I don't think we'll do much with a traditional FB either, but Kelly's love for player versatility tells me that guys like James Casey and Emil Igwenagu will see opportunities at H-Back/TE. (Last year much was made of Igwenagu being able to do that)

As for the WR's being shallow, next year is PRECISELY what I mean. No one expects much from Kelly's team this year, so this is the perfect time for him to grab a guy who can be a factor NEXT year, and offset anybody we lose. (Got one of those on my Wish List too.)
  • I'm all for preparing for the future every team should be doing it every year. I was just saying the pressing needs for this season (most of are on the defensive side of the ball) would be RG and line depth.

I'm sure the coaches will look later in the draft for a WR, but I expect this years draft to be highly focused on defense and offensive line. Obviously drafting a QB is up in the air depending on who you talk to but I don't see them drafting a WR until the 5th round at the earliest.
  • I'm hoping they wait longer until the 7th to take a WR.

As far as focusing on the O-line My Wish List sounds like yours apparently.
  • Yea after last year being decimated by injuries they HAVE to do something about depth if nothing else. As for the 5th round comment I agree I hope they take a WR later if they do. I just meant if it was a guy they fell in love with I'd be alright with a 5th round pick as long as the first four rounds we're played wisely.
