West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck is reportedly the front-runner to take over the same position at the University of Texas according to a report Monday. Orangebloods.com cited sources that claimed Andrew Luck’s father is the school’s top candidate to take over for the departing DeLoss Dodds. The report claims Luck is due to meet with a seven-member advisory committee as early as this week. If he gets approval from the committee, the 53-year-old could be hired sometime in November. Luck graduated from Texas’s law school and helped oversee and orchestrate West Virginia’s moved to the Big 12. He is also a member of the 2014 playoff selection committee, so he looks like a perfect candidate for the school. Luck has yet to comment publicly on the opening at Texas but you’d have to think he would jump at an offer to take over one of the best athletic departments in the country. The only hitch would be the fact that Luck was an undergrad at West Virginia, so he would be leaving one alma mater for another. He was a two-time Academic All-American (1980, 1981) and a two-time team MVP at West Virginia as a quarterback. Texas president Bill Powers is said to be enamored with Luck, who was a Rhodes scholar finalist in 1981. Luck would be seen as a great replacement for Dodds after his 32-year run at the school. He is said to have an engaging personality and a CEO-type approach. Luck was the president of the Houston Dynamo when the team won back-to-back Major League Soccer titles in 2006 and 2007. He is in his first stint as an athletic director at West Virginia, but virtually all reports have praised his work in the position. Texas is hoping to end the search for Dodds’ successor as soon as possible to stabilize things within the athletic department. If Luck impresses in his meeting this week, a contract could be finalized November 13 or 14 when Texas regents are scheduled to meet.
