Found July 02, 2012 on Midwest Sports Fans:
It’s July, which means that the 2012 Summer Olympics begin later this month. This weekend, we learned a lot about who will be competing in London and in what events. Here are some of the highlights: Track and Field When Usain Bolt crossed the 200-meter finish line in world-record time four years ago in Beijing, none of the other runners were same time zone. Bolt won’t have it so easy this summer in London. Sunday at Jamaica’s Olympic team trials, Bolt finished second in the 200, 0.03 seconds behind first-time Olympian Johan Blake. On Friday, Blake had beaten Bolt in the 100, the other event in which Bolt holds the world record. When asked if he was worried, Bolt said, “I’m never worried until my coach gets worried, and my coach isn’t worried, so I’m OK.” Yohan Blake went two-for-two against Usain Bolt at the Jamaican Olympic trials. Another 7-race program for Phelps

Michael Phelps' Olympic program is set. He'll be going for another seven gold medals. He's not the only one who'll be busy in London. Get ready to see a lot of Missy Franklin. And how `bout Anthony Ervin! After eight years away from swimming, he'll be at the Olympics, too. Phelps wrapped up another stellar week at the U.S. trials Sunday night, rallying to win...

Blake beats Bolt again, takes 200

No posing, no salutes, no fist pumping. Yohan Blake simply paced in front of the jam-packed grandstand at National Stadium and stared up into the crowd, letting all those fans soak in a nice, long look. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the man to beat at the London Olympics. In a result that can no longer be considered a surprise, Blake beat Usain Bolt in the 200 meters at Jamaican...

Turns out, seven is enough for Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps did a wise thing Monday: He gave up the chance to compete for another eight Olympic gold medals. The move will allow him to rest properly at the London Games and have time to recover between races, which is much more important now that he's 27 years old, his body battered by a dozen years of high-level swimming. He's out of an event that might be more loaded...

Bolt's biggest opponent still himself

When American sprinter Justin Gatlin, who talks as fast as he runs, said recently that people are tiring of the Usain Bolt show, and that he was ready to step into the picture, Bolt blew him off. "I don't want to sound rude or anything,'' Bolt said, "but I think Gatlin had his chance. That's a funny thing he said . . . I think he has a few guys to get past...

Rooms with Views: Olympic Village ready to go

Usain Bolt can thank me anytime for helping ensure that he gets a good night's sleep at this summer's London Olympics. Organizers held a slumber party this weekend, opening the big glass doors and immense dining halls of the Athletes' Village to several hundred journalists, local officials and assorted others in a trial run - giving games planners a chance to work out...

Another 8-race program for Phelps

Michael Phelps has earned a chance to swim eight Olympic races, rallying to win the 100-meter butterfly at the U.S. trials. Phelps was slow off the blocks and made the turn in sixth place Sunday night. But he caught Tyler McGill on the return lap and surged to the wall to win 51.14 seconds, well off his world-record pace (49.82) but fastest in the world this year. McGill hung on...

8 with NC ties make US swim team

Davis Tarwater didn't qualify for the London Games, yet Tuesday morning he joined seven other swimmers from North Carolina at Olympic practice. Thanks to Michael Phelps. Phelps' decision to pull out of the 200-meter freestyle in the upcoming London Games opened a spot on the U.S. Olympic team for the 28-year-old Tarwater, who'd retired Sunday night after failing to...

8 swimmers with NC ties make Olympic team

Davis Tarwater didn't qualify for the London Games, yet Tuesday morning he joined seven other swimmers from North Carolina at Olympic practice. The first thing Tarwarter did when he got to the pool in Omaha, Neb., was to seek out Michael Phelps. Tarwater says he told Phelps, ''I owe you dinner.'' Indeed, he does. Phelps' decision to pull out of the 200...

Phelps and Lochte are already breaking records

They just haven’t done so in the pool, yet. The intrigue of the friendly but fierce rivalry between Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte might just be stronger than Phelps’ pursuit of 8 gold medals in Beijing if we are to gauge interest level by the overnight ratings of Saturday’s US Olympic Trials on NBC. There [...]

With the 2012 Summer Olympics less than a month away Olympic trials are taking place with battles we’re sure to see on the world stage in the not-so-distant future. Americans Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte have been dueling it out in the swimming pool in Omaha, Nebraska. In Jamaica some of the fastest [...]

Blake, Bolt move on in 200m

An early wake-up call, a quick run and a nap. Could've been a typical Saturday morning for almost anyone in Jamaica, though for Yohan Blake and Usain Bolt, this was anything but typical.

McGill Headed To London Olympics

Tyler McGill finished 2nd to Michael Phelps in the 100 butterfly Sunday night to earn a spot in the Olympics in London.
