Found December 30, 2010 on One Fan's Perspective:

Today’s Disclaimer: If you are one looking for a hockey related article today, I’ll apologize in advance; this one is only indirectly tied to the sport.  This one is primarily for me, so if you don’t want to read it, that’s fine, you can move along and I’ll see you later – no hard feelings.

However,  if you do read it, thank you for allowing me to write this, and I promise not to self-disclose too much so that we’re uncomfortable.  I don’t like reading personal stuff about people I hardly know as well, and since we hardly know each other, I’ll do my best only to be honest, and not awkward.

Because 2010 for me was just awful – both professionally and personally.

Personally, I lost my dad in September and I miss him every day. Even though he didn’t care about sports, and never watched hockey, when I first started writing this blog he gave me a subscription for a thesaurus website. It was the gesture that said, I don’t get what you do, but I think this will help you be better at it. He always did that kind of thing.

Professionally, let’s just say that even though I needed to earn my graduate degree, I should have picked a different focus.  If I had a time machine, I’d go back to 2008 and slap that guy for even attempting that pursuit.  However, I do have my degree and I can go in any direction in my life that I want; that’s exactly what I plan to do.

With every new year, we can choose to make resolutions, to make changes, to set overreaching goals, and to forget them months later. I’m not going to do that either.

Instead, I plan to press ctrl-alt-del on 2010 (and for the past two years) and start the hell over.

The best thing about that is if I decided to move forward in my career, I wouldn’t be able to reconnect with hockey or with the other passions in my life.  I would be working way too much and life is just too short to do so.

Dad worked for others and I do the same today, but he always had time to do what he wanted when the work day is done.  It’s one of the lessons that I’ve failed to learn until now. 2011 and beyond will be different and I’m looking forward to the change.

So if you’ve read this far, I appreciate it more than you know.  You might have gotten to know me a little better, and I promise that the next article I write will be about hockey, or sports, or the sports industry.  For real.

Here’s to 2011.
