TEAMS: San Francisco Giants, Cincinnati Reds, New York Giants
Happy birthday to Giants Hall of Famer Willie McCovey, born on this date in Mobile, Alabama in 1938.
On this date in Giants history…
1907 : The New York Giants’ John McGraw plays the role of off-field hero as he prevents a team of horses from injuring two women at a game in Los Angeles.
1928: The New York Giants trade second baseman Rogers Hornsby to the Boston Braves for catcher Shanty Hogan and outfielder Jimmy Welsh. Hornsby would lead the National League with a .387 batting average the following season.
2010: The Giants sign Aubrey Huff to a one-year contract. He will play first base after being mainly a designated hitter with Baltimore and Detroit in 2009, and will be a key cog in the Giants drive to their first World Championship in San Francisco.
2011: Edgar Renteria, the MVP of the 2010 World Series, signs a one-year deal with the Reds. He states in an interview that he had to choose Cincinnati because the Giants’ offer of half the salary and a back-up role was “a total disrespect.” The Reds also sign another former Giant—outfielder Fred Lewis—who was the Blue Jays’ starting left fielder in 2010.
