Happy birthday to former Giants catcher Brian Johnson, who turns 44 today. The Oakland native and Stanford alumnus, who hit just 49 big league dongs during his eight-year career, smacked two game-winning home runs in the final 11 days of the 1997 season to help the Giants clinch the NL West division.

On this date in Giants history…

1918: Veteran infielder Buck Herzog is traded by the New York Giants to the Boston Braves for second baseman Larry Doyle and pitcher Jesse Barnes. Barnes will go 6-1 the following season and then win a league-high 25 games in 1919. Doyle, a former Giants and fan favorite, was acquired from the Chicago Cubs four days prior and his trade was rumored. He will end up playing just three years in New York before retiring.

1944: New York Giants’ Hall of Fame first baseman Bill Terry announces his retirement from baseball and plans to start a cotton business.

1963: Funeral services for Hall of Fame second baseman Rogers Hornsby (who played for the Giants in 1927) are held in Chicago. Hall of Fame director Sid Keener, American League president Will Harridge and Hall of Famers Lou Boudreau, Gabby Hartnett, Ted Lyons and Ray Schalk attend the services for Hornsby, who died from a heart attack on January 5.

1986: Willie McCovey is the only player elected to the Hall of Fame in 1986 by the BBWAA. McCovey, who received 346 votes, became the 16th player to gain election in his first year of eligibility. The slugging first baseman played 22 years for the Giants, Padres and Athletics, hitting 521 home runs to put him in a tie for 10th place on the all-time list.

1991: For the first time since 1984, three players are elected to the Hall of Fame: two 300-game winners, Gaylord Perry (who played for the Giants 1962-’71) and Ferguson Jenkins, and a member of the 3,000-hit club, Rod Carew, who becomes the 22nd player to be named in his first year of eligibility. Ironically, none of the three players ever appeared in a World Series.

2003: Former All-Star catcher Gary Carter (who played for the Giants for one season, in 1990) is elected into the Hall of Fame on his sixth try after falling 11 votes short in 2002.
