The Philadelphia Phillies worked out former slugger Dmitri Young today, according to ESPN’s Jim Bowden. Young, 38, is attempting a comeback at the major league level.
Young spent the last several years of his career with his weight fluctuating between 290 and 320. He is down to 232, and intent on playing again at the professional level.
Young last played in 2008 with the Washington Nationals, hitting .280/.394/.400 with four home runs and 10 RBIs in 180 plate appearances. He is primarily a first baseman at this point in his career.
Young is a two-time All-Star with a .292 lifetime batting average and 171 home runs. He won the 2007 NL Comeback Player of the Year award.

Hamels deserves big money from Phillies
Virtually all contracts are defensible, even ones that don't turn out so well.
Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. had his reasons for awarding a monster extension to first baseman Ryan Howard and massive free-agent deals to left-hander Cliff Lee and closer Jonathan Papelbon.
But regardless of how one might assess those deals -- Howard looks like a thumbs...
Player Profile #102: Ryan Howard | 1B | PHI
Phillies manager Charlie Manual has pretty much conceded that Ryan Howard will miss the start of the season. Assuming everything goes smoothly with his rehab, a big assumption for a big man recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon, Howard should be ready by sometime in late April or early May. Once he does get back, we’ll likely see the same thing we’ve come to see...
Update: Bryce Harper is not a fan of the Redskins, Georgetown, Wizards, or Caps...
...loves the Nationals though.
Bryce Harper has been taking questions from his Twitter followers over past week, which is a pretty cool thing. That's how the world found out that his puppy Swag would, in fact, accompany him to Washington when he arrives, and that he showers four times before a game as part of his pregame routine. Last night, Harper reminded DMV sports fans...
Juan Pierre, Domonic Brown, and plans
Last week, the Phillies signed Juan Pierre to a minor-league contract. Pierre’s most likely role with the club is as the fifth or sixth outfielder. His primary duty might be to pinch run when Jim Thome reaches base in the late innings. Once Ryan Howard returns from his Achilles injury—projected sometime in May—Pierre may be designated for assignment.
What makes this...

Phillies Sign RHP Chad Qualls
The Phillies have yet again added to their offseason shopping list. This time, they’ve reeled in a right-handed relief pitcher by the name of Chad Qualls. The 33 year-old Qualls has 8 major league seasons under his belt. In those 8, he’s garnered a career 38-34 record and a 3.78 ERA.
Qualls last pitched for the San Diego Padres, where he appeared 77 times. Although posting...

Player Profile #101: Jordan Zimmermann | SP | WAS
If Jordan Zimmermann can put together a full, 200-inning season, he’ll be a fantasy force to be reckoned with. His walk rate went from very good to pretty much elite last season, and there’s definitely room for growth with his strikeout rate. In fact, if Zimmermann made the standard 33 starts last season instead of just 26, his PSR would have risen from 0.79 to 2.47,...
Nats look to Lidge for veteran leadership
Although Brad Lidge has closed for the vast majority of his major league career, he'll step into a setup role with the Washington Nationals in 2012. The Nats are hoping the 35-year-old veteran can help provide leadership to a promising young bullpen.
Former Philadelphia Phillies Outfielder Pat Burrell to Retire
Pat Burrell will be retiring from the game of baseball, sources said. Burrell, 35, finishes his 14-year major league career with 292 home runs, 976 runs batted in, and two World Series rings – on the 2008 Philadelphia Phillies and 2010 San Francisco Giants.
Amazingly, Burrell was 1-for-27 in his World Series career, but still managed to earn two rings. The lone hit was arguably...

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed veteran relief pitcher Chad Qualls to a one-year deal, according to multiple sources.
