Per Phillies MLB.com beat reporter Todd Zolecki, the Phillies have signed soon-to-be 36-year-old infielder Ronnie Belliard to a minor league deal.
In 13 seasons, Belliard has played for six teams. (Milwaukee, Colorado, Cleveland, St. Louis, Washington, Los Angeles Dodgers) He was an All Star in 2004 with the Indians.
Not too sure what Belliard has left in the tank, but with the Phillies releasing 35-year-old second baseman Luis Castillo a few days ago, you have to assume that this is just filler in case Michael Martinez fails on the big league level as the teams backup utility guy.
Belliard career numbers are: .273 avg., 114 home runs, 601 RBI, .338 on-base percentage, and a .753 OPS.
