The Philadelphia Phillies agreed to a minor league contract with outfielder Willy Taveras today. The 28 year old was with Washington this season and hit .200 in 35 at bats before being released on May 25. Taveras, a career .274 hitter, could figure in as an extra outfielder for the Phillies at some point in the season. He could fill the role that Chris Roberson and Michael Bourn used to have as a late inning replacement in the outfield or a pinch runner. He has stolen 195 bases in his career and is still a threat on the bases. The deal is a good one for the Phillies as Taveras adds depth to the outfield and could be used as a leadoff hitter if the Phillies were to suffer another top of the lineup injury. For more news on all of your favorite Philadelphia teams, check out MTRPhilly.com or follow us on Facebook!
