Color me surprised: Ruben Amaro Jr. found a taker for Major League Baseball’s most statistically ineffective player John McDonald, shipping the utility infielder he got for nothing for Nefi Ogando, a 24-year old reliever from the Dominican Republic in his fourth season in organized baseball. McDonald hit .174/.208/.304 with one homer with the Phillies. This nearly tripled his entire triple-slash line at the time the Phillies acquired him (.053/.163/.079).
From Sox Prospects, here is a scouting report on Ogando:
Dominican right-hander signed later in the 2009-2010 international signing period. On the older side for an international signee. Fastballs sits 92-93 mph and tops out at 94 mph in shorter bursts. Currently being stretched out to sharpen arsenal. Loses velocity as outings progress due to max-effort delivery. Does not easily generate velocity. Below-average fastball command due to inc...

Following a pair of roster moves on Saturday, in which the Phillies traded veteran infielders John McDonald and Michael Young to playoff contenders, vacancies on the big league roster have been filled with the returns of Michael Martinez and Cesar Hernandez, as the duo has been promoted from Lehigh Valley.
Martinez, who turns 31-years-old this month...
The Red Sox have acquired utility infielder John McDonald and cash considerations from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for minor league pitcher Nefi Ogando.
Boston will be McDonald’s fourth home of the season as the 38-year-old has spent time with the Pirates, Indians and most recently the Phillies. Between the three clubs he has gone 6-for-61 adding one home run and 4 RBIs...
John McDonald is finally playing in his own backyard.
McDonald — a New London, Conn., native, Scituate, Mass., resident and Providence College product — is now suiting up for the Red Sox in his 15th major league season. While it marks McDonald’s seventh major league team and fourth of 2013, the 38-year-old journeyman always viewed Boston as a potential destination.

Young, 36, figures to get the bulk of the playing time at third base in September and had to waive his no-trade clause to make the deal happen.
Young is hitting .276/.336/.395 with eight home runs., 42 RBI and 49 runs scored this season.
Acquired last winter...

The six-year, $48 million contract that the Phillies agreed to with Cuban pitcher Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez has been substantially modified, and is now a three-year, $12 million deal according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox. Roy Halladay had trouble gripping the ball in the steamy conditions. Domonic Brown’s sore right heel started to bother him again. Yet the Philadelphia Phillies just kept plugging away.
It turned into the perfect homecoming for Ryne Sandberg.
Michael Young had four hits including a tiebreaking RBI single in the ninth inning and the Phillies rallied for a 6-5 victory over the Chicago...

Well, you can’t win ‘em all. Or even most of them if you’re the 2013 Phillies. They dropped another game today, losing to the Cubs 4-3. It’s the 74th time they’ve lost this season. Methinks they’ll be finishing below .500.
In a game where neither starting pitcher was able to make it beyond the fifth inning, the two teams...
The Phillies finished an up and down week on the road with a loss on Sunday at Wrigley Field. Kyle Kendrick got the start seeking to pull his 2013 record up to .500. He would run into trouble early, as the Cubs went single, walk, single to take a 1-0 lead in the first. Cubs’ […]
