PLAYERS: Mike Smith
TEAMS: Phoenix Coyotes
Step aside, Barry Melrose. Mike Smith’s new mullet may be the most ridiculous hairstyle to hit the NHL. My first thought when I saw this photo was, “When did Mike Smith have the time to get drunk enough to let someone do this to his head?” However, upon further investigation, it appears that this was a sober decision and that Smith is actually quite fond of his new ‘do. It’s not exactly your standard mullet, it’s more like a cross between that and a mohawk. I can’t help but wonder who is actually responsible for this work of art. Maybe Biznasty? Edward Scissorhands? Probably Biznasty. Regardless, it’s certainly….unique. In the interview below, Smith has challenged the media to come up with a name for the hairstyle. So far they’ve come up “fullet” or “mullhawk.” What would you call it? I call it sleazy. John Jaeckel: Hawks Storm Desert

Follow me @jaeckel Hockey is a funny sport. 10 months ago, Phoenix goalie Mike Smith and his flowing locks were the toast of the game. These days, Smith is a complete sieve—albeit still possessing his tonsorial splendor. The Blackhawk Blitzkrieg through the Western Conference continued last night in Glendale, AZ, with a 6-2 beatdown administered to the Coyotes, Phoenix’...

Coyotes goalie gets haircut, now has a mullet

Prior to this week, Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith had been growing out his hair for a very long time. As you can see from the photo above on the left, he had one of the raddest hairstyles in the NHL for all of last season and into this year. Many fans will be disappointed to hear that Smith recently cut his hair — until they see his new haircut. The photo above on the right...

Jamal Mayers vs. Raffi Torres

This is one of the things that I like about the NHL. The players sort things out on the ice and settle things like men. Last season, during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Raffi Torres steam rolled Marian Hossa with a dirty and dangerous hit. Hossa suffered a concussion and Torres was suspended for 25 games. Torres appealed the suspension, and the NHL reduced his...

Coyotes plan to 'correct problems' in San Jose

GLENDALE, Ariz. The Sharks will have had four days to stew on back-to-back losses by the time the Coyotes take the ice Saturday for a matinee meeting at HP Pavilion. San Jose wasnt beaten in regulation in its first eight games before the Ducks and Blackhawks stalled what had been a torrid start with 2-1 and 5-3 wins in Anaheim and San Jose, respectively. Will that mean a more...

Flashback: Coyotes Raffi Torres hit on Blackhawks Hossa (video)

The Chicago Blackhawks Marian Hossa took a nasty illegal hit from the Phoenix Coyotes‘ Raffi Torres in last year’s NHL playoffs. The brutal  that left him motionless on the ice. As you can see after the jump, Torres left his feet for the hit so he’s likely going to face a suspension. He’s a repeat offender, so he could face 10 games. Brendan Shanahan suspended Torres before...

John Jaeckel: Hawks at Coyotes GameDay Preview

Follow me @jaeckel Chicago Blackhawks @ Phoenix Coyotes 9PM Eastern/8 Central/7 Mountain CSN Chicago/WGN Radio The key for the Hawks here is to guard against a letdown, after Tuesday night’s big win in San Jose.
