For the most part, the Pirates have not played well on the road against contenders. Entering this weekend, they had won just one road series against a playoff-bound team (the Cardinals, in May) and had been swept by all three NL division leaders. To go down to a tough environment in Texas and sweep a very good Rangers club is extremely impressive, and is a huge turnaround for the Bucs after the dismal weekend in St Louis. Huge. The big reason for the turnaround was the pitching. A.J. Burnett ended up with five runs on his line, but delivered a pretty good outing. He started out in dominant fashion, staying perfect in to the fifth. The Rangers picked up two after getting to him a bit, but he avoided more problems with a DP. AJ then allowed another run and two baserunners in the seventh, when he was lifted. Those runs came around to score against Jeanmar Gomez, but the Bucs held on to their lead and needed him to get fairly deep into the game with their top three bullpen arms unavailable. Matt Garza, on the other hand, was pretty ineffective for Texas.  Felix Pie (playing in place of Andrew McCutchen, who got a day off) walked, stole second, and scored on Neil Walker‘s RBI hit for the Bucs’ first run of the game on the third. Two singles and two walks (the last of which was Clint Barmes with the bases loaded) brought home one in the fourth, and a botched DP ball added another. In the fifth, Justin Morneau and Marlon Byrd led off with base hits, which allowed Pedro Alvarez to produce a run despite a GIDP. After Texas narrowed the lead against Burnett, Morneau and Byrd teamed up again with base hits to set up Alvarez, who brought a run in with a sac-fly. A wild pitch added one more, so the Rangers certainly did their share, but the middle of the Bucs’ lineup (particularly Morneau, with four hits) had a productive game. Again, Texas narrowed the lead when Gomez couldn’t preserve AJ’s line. Things got hairy quickly in the ‘pen, as Hurdle turned to Bryan Morris to escape Gomez’s mess, which he thankfully did. Vin Mazzaro cleaned up Morris’ mess in the eighth, and Barmes padded the lead a bit with a towering solo shot off the foul pole. Yes, it was towering – a classic Barmes blast that simply shocked everybody. Amazingly, the easiest three outs of the afternoon from the bullpen came from Kyle Farnsworth, who was named the closer for the day. The former failed closer has looked good for the Pirates so far after his under the radar signing (only three low leverage innings prior to today) and calmly got three quick outs as Twitter freaked out about his temporary role. Huge week for the Pirates. As we’ve seen, momentum isn’t all that important going forward, but you’ve got to feel good as they head home for 11 games at PNC. The final homestand of the year will be nuts. Pirates 7, Rangers 5 / Box / 2013 Record: 84-61 / Next: Thursday, vs. Cubs, 7:05 Source: FanGraphs

Pittsburgh Pirates: 10 thoughts after sweep of Rangers

(Follow me on Twitter @jim_krug; opening image credit idahostatesman) 1.  This could be the sweep that locks in a playoff spot for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and saves their September.  After being swept and knocked out of first place by the St. Louis Cardinals- and heading to Arlington with a slumping rotation to face a high-powered Texas Rangers’ offense- the potential was easily...

First Pitch: The State of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Rotation

For most of the season the Pittsburgh Pirates have been carried by strong pitching, especially out of the starting rotation. Almost all of their starters have performed well this year, including most of the depth options that have come up to fill in for injuries. Now we’re approaching the end of the season, and the Pirates have their best starters in the mix. The Pirates are also...

P3 Episode 19: Catching Up With Rocco DeMaro

Episode 19 of The Pirates Prospects Podcast can be downloaded or streamed below. It has been a few weeks since our last podcast. We recorded a show a few weeks ago, but the Pirates traded for Marlon Byrd the next day which made the podcast outdated before we had the chance to post it. Then we waited through illness, waited until the Pirates made all of their moves, then finally waited...

Woman poses next to what must be a Sammy Sosa wax scultpure … wait, what? (photo)

I’m not sure why this story is considered newsworthy, but a photo of a young woman posing next to a wax sculpture of former Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa is making its way around the Internet. Sure, Sosa’s ill-conceived Pinterest page was hilarious and warranted attention, but this pic? Strange. I have to say that […]The post Woman poses next to what must be a Sammy Sosa...

Clint Barmes homered and drew a bases-loaded walk for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who completed a three-game sweep in an interleague matchup of wild-card leaders with a 7-5 victory over the slumping Texas Rangers on Wednesday. Justin Morneau, acquired from Minnesota less than two weeks ago, snapped an 0-for-14 slump with four hits while scoring twice. The Pirates (84-61) moved within...

Pirates fan barrels over kid chasing ground rule double (Video)

A Pittsburgh Pirates fan ran took out a kid by running right over the top of him while attempting to grab a ground rule double that bounced into stands during Thursday night's game at PNC Park. It happened in the top of the third inning on a ball hit to deep left center field by Chicago Cubs batter Darnell McDonald. A kid had positioned himself perfectly to snag the ball...

The Return of Nelson Cruz to the Texas Rangers

With the regular season winding down to a dramatic conclusion the Texas Rangers are looking towards the horizon to prepare for playoffs. With a decently commanding lead of the AL Wild Card race with a four game lead over the Rays, the Rangers are safe to assume that they will be making an appearance in the MLB postseason this year. The still have a chance at the AL West pennant as...

Pirates complete three-game sweep of Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Clint Barmes homered and drew a bases-loaded walk for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who completed a three-game sweep in an interleague matchup of wild-card leaders with a 7-5 victory over the slumping Texas Rangers on Wednesday. Game 145: Pirates 7 Rangers 5

Andrew McCutchen stayed on the bench all afternoon, AJ Burnett gave up five runs, and Kyle Farnsworth was the Pirates' closer. Despite all that, the Pirates finished up a sweep of the Texas Rangers (who need wins every bit as badly as the Pirates do right now) with a 7-5 win this afternoon that was at least a little bit easier than last night's white-knuckler. I meanm...

Game 144: Pirates 5 Rangers 4

When the Pirates took a 4-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning, I thought that maybe they were going to coast to an easy win. That would've been a little bit of a relief after last night's nailbiter. Almost immediately, the Pirates started to let the Rangers back into the game. Francisco Liriano (who was good tonight without having his best stuff, which is nice to see given...

Are we in the midst of any Pirates-like losing streaks?

By now, you know this already, but in case you haven't - the Pittsburgh Pirates won their 82nd game last night. 2013 will mark their first winning seasons since 1992, also the year of their last playoff berth. This run of failure is unprecedented across professional sports, and Pirates fans are just happy to have it behind them. Of course, it's not in our culture to simply...

Ransgers' Yu Darvish (leg cramps) likely to make next start

After pitching brilliantly for seven innings for the Texas Rangers, starting pitcher Yu Darvish left Monday night's game in the eighth inning with cramp-like symptoms. ESPN Dallas's Todd Wills reports that Darvish started to feel the cramp beginning in the seventh inning of the Rangers' 1-0 loss to Pittsburgh, but the discomfort did not affect his pitching. The Rangers...

Photo: Texas Rangers have their own line of frozen breakfast foods

A company by the name of Pastime Foods is producing a line of frozen breakfast food inspired by the Texas Rangers. Yes, apparently such a baffling thing exists, and the maker's official website offers very little description as to what the products are all about. INTRODUCING THE STARTING LINEUP of MLB all natural breakfast pancakes, waffles, and french toast. This...

The day after

Last night and today has been a lot of fun, but that's over and done with now. The Pirates have 82 wins and a winning season is clinched; now it's time to focus on winning the NL Central.  Last night's win was actually a huge step in that direction as much as it was the club's 82nd win. I sort of figured they'd need two wins in Texas to stay in the race before...
