The Baltimore Orioles are aggressively making changes to get back to the playoffs. The return of Wei-Yin Chen seems to have already bolstered their chances. Chen looks to win a third straight start since returning from the disabled list while the Orioles attempt to re-establish themselves at the plate against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night. Baltimore (57-44) holds one of the league's two wild-card spots and is third in the AL East, two games back of second-place Tampa Bay and 3 12 behind Boston for first. The Orioles are already making moves ahead of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, acquiring reliever Francisco Rodriguez from Milwaukee on Tuesday in exchange for minor league infielder Nick Delmonico. Baltimore has a proven closer in Jim Johnson, who leads the majors with 35 saves. However, Rodriguez gives manager Buck Showalter another veteran option late in close games. Rodriguez converted all 10 of his save opportunities, compiling a 1.09 ERA with 26 str...

Santana 'blows up' over trade rumors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Will Royals right-hander Ervin Santana be traded? Will he stay with the Royals and sign a long-term deal? Who knows? I chatted with Santana on Tuesday about all the possibilities, and he was his usual easygoing, laid-back self. And later, Santana posted a pretty funny video on his Twitter account with the heading Trade Rumors," a video that probably sums...

Chen's 2 mistakes cost Orioles in 4-3 loss at KC

Two mistakes ruined Wei-Yin Chen's chance of a third straight win since coming off the disabled list. Chen yielded two home runs to Eric Hosmer, and the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night. Alcides Escobar doubled home the winning run with one out in the ninth inning. Hosmer hit a solo homer on a full-count pitch in the...

Baltimore Orioles acquire Francisco Rodriguez from the Milwaukee Brewers

The Baltimore Orioles acquired four-time All-Star Francisco Rodriguez from the Milwaukee Brewers for Nick Delmonico on July 23. (Photo Credit: Mike McGinnis/Getty Images) Earl Weaver, the late Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame manager, famously said “The key to winning games is pitching, fundamentals and three-run homers.” When current manager Buck Showalter took over the team...

Ervin Santana wants All-Star pitchers to play dodgeball

During the MLB Home Run Derby, the pitchers really don't have much to do. I mean, they stand there and gawk at monstrous home runs, and...that's about all. Royals starting pitcher Ervin Santana, who was an All-Star just once in 2008, has a suggestion for All-Star weekend that would get the pitchers involved: dodge ball. Next year at #MLB #allstargame we should...

Francisco Rodriguez traded for Baltimore 3B prospect

The Brewers have traded veteran reliever Francisco Rodriguez to the Baltimore Orioles for third base prospect Nick Delmonico. Several teams had shown interest in Rodriguez, 31, who signed with the Brewers after the season began but eventually became their clsoer. He was 1-1 with a 1.09 ER in 25 games and had converted all 10 of his save opportunities. But, with the team mired in...

The American Forces Network will televise the game to U.S. troops around the world. I applaud the St. Louis Cardinals and Fox Sports Midwest for saluting the troops. As a Royals fan, it’s...

Orioles 9, Royals 2

Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy each drove in three runs and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Kansas City Royals 9-2 on Monday night to extend their winning streak to a season-high five games. Davis, who leads the majors with 97 RBIs, drove in a pair of runs with a sixth-inning double and another with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Hardy homered, his 17th of the season, in the...

Orioles likely aren't done dealing

The Baltimore Orioles have been the most aggressive buyers on the trade market and they might not be done shopping, says Ken Rosenthal.

Royals squander numerous scoring chances but still beat Orioles 3-2

Start with this: The Royals should have been on cruise control Tuesday night entering the ninth inning. They were, instead, clinging to a two-run lead after wasting a bushel of scoring opportunities. And then things got tense before Greg Holland, in All-Star closer form, closed out a 3-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles by stranding the tying run at third base with no outs. “Our...

Royals rally for 4-3 victory over Orioles

What’s that classic Monty Python line? Not dead yet! Who knows? But there are times like Wednesday’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Baltimore when the Royals even now make you want to believe. Alcides Escobar rocked a one-out walk-off double in the ninth inning that Nate McLouth couldn’t quite reach at the left-field wall. David Lough scored from first base after initially holding...
