That is probably due to his struggles with control since the end of April. The control problems didn’t disappear in relief tonight. Oliver walked two in two innings. The one consolation is that he had a good first inning, giving up just one walk and striking out one. The run came in the second inning on a walk and three hits, but he limited the damage with two more strikeouts. Jared Hughes pitched for the second day in a row. Back to back rehab appearances is usually the last step for relievers. Vic Black was called up to the majors today, so it’s unknown whether Black will remain in Pittsburgh, or go down when Hughes is ready to return. Hughes does have options, so it’s no guarantee he will be back in Pittsburgh when his rehab is up.   AA: ALTOONA CURVE    Game One Box Score Result: Trenton 3, Altoona 2 Starting Pitcher: Nick Kingham, RHP (2.89) – 5.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 0 HR Top Hitter: Alex Dickerson, RF (.288) – 1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI Other Notable Performers: Gregory Polanco, CF (.267) – 0-for-1, 3 BB, SB   Game Two Box Score Result: Trenton 3, Altoona 1 Starting Pitcher: Eliecer Navarro, LHP (2-4, 4.62) – 4.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 2 HR Top Hitter: Justin Howard, 1B (.325) – 2-for-3 Other Notable Performers: Mel Rojas, LF (.271) – 1-for-3, SB Game Notes: Check out John Dreker’s recap of Nick Kingham’s start.   A+: BRADENTON MARAUDERS   Box Score Result: Lakeland 6, Bradenton 3 Starting Pitcher: Pat Ludwig, RHP (0-1, 3.15) – 4.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1 HR Top Hitter: Willy Garcia, RF (.253) – 3-for-4, 2B Other Notable Performers: Alen Hanson, SS (.279) – 1-for-5, HR Game Notes: Alen Hanson homered for the second day in a row, hitting his seventh of the year. (Photo Credit: Tom Bragg) A: WEST VIRGINIA POWER   Game One Box Score Result: West Virginia 1, Kannapolis 0 Starting Pitcher: Tyler Glasnow, RHP (7-2, 2.27) – 6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 0 HR Top Hitter: Walker Gourley, DH (.329) – 2-for-2, SB Other Notable Performers: Dilson Herrera, 2B (.266) – 1-for-3 Game Notes: Tyler Glasnow was dominant tonight, going six shutout innings for the second time in his last three starts. On the season Glasnow has a 2.27 ERA in 87.1 innings, with a 122:48 K/BB ratio. He has a 3.6 BB/9 ratio in his last nine starts, which is good when you consider that it is paired with an 11.7 K/9 ratio in that same amount of time. Walker Gourley stole his 28th base of the year. He and Dilson Herrera combined for the only three West Virginia hits.   Game Two Box Score Result: West Virginia 5, Kannapolis 1 Starting Pitcher: Luis Heredia, RHP (2-2, 4.21) – 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 0 HR Top Hitter: Jonathan Schwind, LF (.243) – 1-for-3, HR, 4 RBI Other Notable Performers: Josh Bell, RF (.283) – 1-for-3 Eric Wood, 3B (.245) – 2-for-3 Game Notes: Jonathan Schwind hit his second homer of the year, which was a grand slam that made the difference in this game. The homer led to a five run third inning for West Virginia. Luis Heredia bounced back from a bad outing the last time out. Heredia has been good in five of his six starts this year, although his control has struggled. In 25.2 innings he has an 18:17 K/BB ratio.   A-: JAMESTOWN JAMMERS   Box Score Result: Jamestown 7, Batavia 0 Starting Pitcher: Chad Kuhl, RHP (1-1, 0.90) – 5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 0 HR Top Hitter: Harold Ramirez, LF (.328) – 3-for-4, 3B, 3 RBI Other Notable Performers: Jin-De Jhang, DH (.306) – 3-for-4, 2B Erich Weiss, 3B (.313) – 1-for-2, BB, SB Game Notes: 2013 9th round pick Chad Kuhl is off to a great start in his career. He has an 0.90 ERA in 20 innings, with a 17:3 K/BB ratio. He also has just a .194 BAA, and has only given up runs in one of his five starts. Jin-De Jhang was struggling recently, going 0-for-9 in his last three games, and 6-for-33 in his last nine games before tonight. He got back on track tonight with three hits and his fourth double of the year. Harold Ramirez hasn’t stopped hitting, and has a .341/.364/.488 line in 41 at-bats over his last ten games. He also has a .405/.467/.595 line in 79 at-bats in the month of July.   RK: GCL PIRATES    Box Score Result: Pirates 17, Braves 7 Starting Pitcher: Neil Kozikowski, RHP (4.50) – 2.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 0 HR Top Hitter: Austin Meadows, CF (.234) – 3-for-4, 2B, BB Other Notable Performers: Carlos Ozuna, SS (.206) – 3-for-4, 2 2B, BB, 2 RBI Candon Myles, LF (.344) – 3-for-6, 2B Reese McGuire, DH (.407) – 1-for-5, BB, 4 RBI Ulises Montilla, 2B (.320) – 2-for-6, 2B, 3 RBI Danny Arribas, C (.257) – 3-for-5, 2B Nick Buckner, RF (.135) – 2-for-5 Angel Sanchez, LHP (2-1, 3.18) – 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 0 HR Game Notes: The Pirates scored a run in every inning, taking batting practice against the GCL Braves pitchers. Austin Meadows is starting to see his bat heat up. In his last nine games he has gone 10-for-34 (.294) with four doubles, two triples, and a homer. He’s 6-for-12 with three doubles and a homer in his last three games. Reese McGuire continues to hit the ball hard. He only had one hit today, but had two other hard hit balls that went for outs. 8th round pick Neil Kozikowski made his debut today. He had trouble in the first due to two errors, but overall had a good outing, limiting the damage and working efficiently.

Jason Grilli's recent struggles and last night's injury

After Jason Grilli served up his home run to Jayson Werth last night, my immediate thought was that the first thing I wanted to do after the game ended was to dig through his profile on Brooks' Baseball to see if I could find a reason for his recent struggles. On June 18th, Grilli struck out the side against the Reds with a 4-0 lead. To that point, Grilli had 34 appearances and...
