I always wonder how rappers get there names, and then I immediately think to myself if I was rapper what would mine be? Of course I’d be named after great athletes like Slava Medvedenko, Mark Madsen, or Mike Penberthy. Which is kind of how Busta Rhymes got his name…from Oklahoma Sooner George “Buster” Rhymes.
Buster grew up in Liberty City, which is a real city in Miami and not the fictional city in Grand Theft Auto. The Wide Receiver was an All-American in HS and went to play at Oklahoma. George “Buster” Rhymes (along with DeMarco Murray) are the only two to surpass 1,000 yards in three different categories. Rhymes finished with 1,158 rushing yards, 1,118 receiving yards and 1,237 kick return yards. totalling for over 3,500 all-purpose yards. Rhymes was an All-American and helped the Sooners to three Bowl Games. However, Rhymes was not perfect, he caused some major off-field problems. Apparently after a snowball fight 6ft 2in Buster Rhymes was either hit or his car was in danger of being hit, so like any other sensible person he went to get an Uzi and fired it in the air. I’m sure nobody has thrown a snowball at him since.
After Oklahoma Rhymes entered the 1985 NFL Draft and was drafted in the 4th round (85th pick overall) by the Minnesota Vikings. Looking back the Vikings should have drafted Andre Reed, who the Buffalo Bills took the pick after. As a rookie Rhymes was their kick returner, and in his 53 returns he had 1,345 return yards with a long of 88, and zero touchdowns. On the receiving end he caught 5 passes for 124 yards and 2 fumbles that means 40% of the times he caught the ball he fumbled it after.
The next season Buster only played in five games, and just like that #88′s NFL career was over. He then went to play for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the CFL where he ended up winning a championship.
In 2004 according to Wikipedia he was convicted of carjacking and possession of crack-cocaine (not at the same time).
I think we can all agree Busta Rhymes picked an ideal candidate to be named after.
