With ESPN’s 2009-2010 college basketball season coming to a close this weekend, we decided to rank their college hoops analysts. (Here’s the list of the 11 announcers who were analysts on ESPN games this season). Factors that played a part in the rankings: Insight, entertainment value (sports is entertainment!), chemistry with play-by-play guy, lack of fear in going after players and coaches when necessary, originality and the “ear test,” which is similar to the “eye test” but probably makes less sense.1. Bill Raftery. We’d watch Patriot League games if he were calling them. Funny, quick-witted, self-deprecating, and insightful. No weakness to his game. Fan or not, you’ll want to read this.2. Jay Bilas. Probably the most nuts-and-bolts guy in this group. Mixes in humor on occasion, and does a solid job of mocking his ability during his playing days.
