Gather around small children. I’ve got a story to tell. You see, back when I was your age (you know, when a gallon of milk cost a nickel, and a trip to school was a long, uphill walk both ways) there was once this great college football rivalry. This rivalry had it all. It annually featured two Top 10 teams and packed stadiums, not to mention a pair of programs that genuinely hated each other’s guts. There were great players, greater games and a once-in-a-generation ball coach, the likes of which we’ve never quite seen before or since. And oh by the way, this game almost always came with big-time pressure; even though it was played in September, this rivalry almost always helped determine the eventual SEC champion. It usually shaped the national title picture too. So what was this great rivalry, maybe my personal favorite of the era? That rivalry was Tennessee-Florida, children. …. Yes kids, I’m being serious. No, no, come back. Story time isn’t over… Ok, I’ll quit it with ...

Spurrier pleased with Gamecocks passing

For one game, South Carolina's head ball coach showed off his old game plan. Steve Spurrier said Sunday he was pleased that backup quarterback Dylan Thompson got the ball away and finally gave Gamecock receivers the chance to make plays. Thompson threw for 330 yards in a 48-10 victory over East Carolina on Saturday. Thompson played for injured starter Connor Shaw. Spurrier...

UAB-South Carolina Preview

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is just one win away from 200 victories in his college coaching career — a milestone he barely recognizes. And second, he knows there are 70 other coaches in all...

Thompson takes over in SCarolina's 48-10 win

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Dylan Thompson completed 21 of 37 passes for 330 yards and three touchdowns to help No. 9 South Carolina (2-0) beat East Carolina 48-10 Saturday. Thompson started the game in place of the injured Connor Shaw, and left little doubt coach Steve Spurrier made the right choice to let Shaw rest. Thompson's first completion was a 53-yard pass to Damiere Byrd. He...

Gamecock Football Gameday Experience: Change Is Good in 2012

The Gamecock football and overall sports program at the University of South Carolina is heading in the right direction. For die-hard Gamecocks, this is a welcomed experience as over the overall history of the program it was tough to be a USC fan. But now, things are looking good as the culture has certainly changed. Thanks to two national championships in baseball, continued...
