Albert Breer of NFL Network is reporting that the NFL Players Association is filing for decertification as a union after negotiation with league owners today. After a seven-day extension on the original deadline to get a CBA done last Friday, the deadline was moved to 5 PM ET tonight. As that time came and went, Breer’s report came out about the decision.
To sum it up, this simply means the union did not feel there was enough progress made so far in negotiations. The union reportedly was okay with an extension as long as the league owners were willing to open their financial books and give away the past ten years of information. Apparently, and not surprisingly, that request was too much for the owners to agree with and the union decided that decertification was the best solution for them.
So what happens next? We are likely going to see an antitrust lawsuit in Minnesota now that there is to be no NFL Players Union. The last time we saw this was the late 1980′s. And with this decision, negotiations will basically come to a halt.
I wish I had better news to report. We’ll update the situation and soon as more news comes out from both parties.
