Pro golfer Phil Mickelson is interested in purchasing a piece of the San Diego Padres, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Monday.

Mickelson, the second all-time leading money winner on the pro tour, has joined four of the grandchildren of former Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley in a partnership to pursue the purchase of the team.

Mickelson said he would put a lot of his own money into the deal.

Three years ago Mickelson had resisted invitations from Jeff Moorad to join in the team's ownership. But now apparently he is ready.

"I've had the opportunity to invest in other sports franchises, and I've turned it down in the past," Mickelson told the Union-Tribune Monday morning. "This was a unique opportunity with families that had done this before and know how to do it right and want to get involved in the community."

Kevin and Brian O'Malley and cousins Peter and Tom Seidler, whose Top of the Third, Inc., owns the Single-A Visalia Rawhide, are one of five parties known to be exploring the purchase of John Moores' controlling interest in the Padres, according to the report.

Peter O'Malley, the former Dodgers owner, is directing the group's activities, but would not become involved in the team's operation if that group succeeded in purchasing the team.

Former Padres star Tony Gwynn has recently said he is interested in being involved in a group that is pursuing a purchase of the team as well.

Mickelson said that if his O'Malley group purchases the Padres, it would like to include Gwynn.

"If we were able to get control, (Gwynn) would be the first person we'd want to get involved," Mickelson said. "He's such an icon with the team. Hopefully, it won't be combative."
