Multiple media outlets are reporting that the Diamondbacks have traded Opening Day starter Ian Kennedy to the San Diego Padres in a package headlined by left-handed relief pitcher Joe Thatcher. Kennedy, who won 21 games in 2011, has struggled mightily of late. He was the losing pitcher on Tuesday night in Tampa, continuing a winless streak that dates to June 1. In his last 10 starts, he's 0-5 with a 5.82 ERA. For the season, he's 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA. This follows a three-year run in Arizona in which Kennedy, 28, was 9-10 with a 3.80 ERA, 21-4 and 2.88 and 15-12 and 4.02. Thatcher, who is primarily a left-handed specialist, is 3-1 this year with a 2.10 ERA. He's pitched 30 innings over 50 appearance, struck out 29, walked only four and given up 28 hits. Left-handed hitters are hitting .215 against him with no extra-base hits. Thatcher is 31 and made his major-league debut in 2007. For his career, he's pitched 198.1 innings over 287 games, with an 8-11 record and 3.18 ERA. The package also regportedly includes 23-year-old right-handed relief pitcher Matt Stites, who is pitching in Double-A. He was a 17th-round draft pick in 2011 and has a 2-2 record with 14 saves and a 2.08 ERA in 46 appearances for San Antonio in the Texas League. Check back later for further details.
