Yesterday JJ Watt put on a defensive show infront of a national audience on MNF against the New York Jets. After the game Rex Ryan was so impressed with his ability; in particular knocking down passes that led to him cracking a great joke in his post game conference suggesting he should suit up for the New York Knicks as a shot blocker.
“That JJ Watt’s the real deal, I think the Knicks should pick him up too with all the shot-blocking he did. It’s not like he doesn’t do it to everybody, but he certainly did it tonight. He’s an excellent football player.”
Gotta love the comedy here from Rex. Best of all it was done in a very non Rex Ryan style without being obnoxious over the top and brash.
His assessment is correct as well Watt does dominate the league defensively but usually doesn’t knock down that many balls as he did with three last night. But, then again it’s not often you get to face one of the worst starting QB’s in the NFL with Mark Sanchez. What I have noticed from Sanchez this year and most of his career is atrocious awareness in the pocket of what’s around him. This is what results in having so many balls knocked down because he doesn’t see the pressure. Almost all his fumbles are from balls knocked out from defensive players coming around the backside and many of his interceptions and bad throws on short throws & screen plays. Because truth be told he still has a decent arm and can move the ball down field, but it’s those other plays that really hinder from having success. Wake up Sanchez get more acquainted to the pressure and stop forcing so many bad balls into coverage.
Moreover, let’s see Rex come out and break it down that way. Putting just as much blame if not more on his QB rather then making it seem like it was all the play of Watt that caused those tipped balls. Ryan always talks about accountability and responsibility for his own team. Why run away from it here?
