Rick Porcello made history on Saturday, but not the kind he’ll want to be remembered for. The Detroit Tigers right-hander logged one of the worst starts in Major League Baseball history in a 10-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. Porcello toe’d the slab in Anaheim for the Tigers, and lasted just two-thirds of an inning, but it was an incredibly long two-thirds of an inning. He threw 47 pitches (just 22 for strikes) and in those tosses he was absolutely ripped. The Angels got to Porcello for nine runs (all earned), on nine hits. He walked one and surrendered a grand slam to Mike Trout. The only two outs he recorded came on a double-play grounder by Chris Iannetta. With that start Porcello became the first pitcher in the Modern Era (post-1900) to pitch two-thirds or fewer innings, while allowing nine earned runs and nine hits. His ERA for the game was 121.62, and his WHIP was 15.02. For the season Porcello has allowed 16 earned runs in just 11 innings over three starts. His already terrible ERA has now ballooned to 11.08, while his WHIP is at 2.00. The 24-year-old former first-round pick has been struggling and clearly hasn’t turned into the ace many forecast he would be coming out of high school. The Tigers’ patience has to be wearing thin. Last season he allowed an American League-worst 226 hits, while limping to a 10-12 record with a 4.59 ERA and 1.53 WHIP.
