Ron Zook works in a small local bank these days. A Gateway Bank branch in Ocala, Florida, as you no doubt have heard by now. Banking is an industry that designates deregulation as the greatest good. The actions of bankers are very lightly regulated as it is, but banking lobbyists are always seeking further deregulation from the government. Ron Zook, the former Head Coach of the Florida Gators and the Illinois Fighting Illini, wants to bring that same spirit of “laissez-faire” and “free markets” to college football recruiting. Ron Zook discussed the topic of limitations on phone calls and text messages to recruits. This was a couple weeks ago on his show “Inside College Football” on CBS Sports Network: Current rules limiting phone calls, texts and social media keep both the perspective student athlete and the coach who is recruiting him from knowing all they would like to know to make an informed decision. I propose that we deregulate these rules… I say let the prospect decide whether or not they want to communicate. The coach should know if he gets no response from that person, the prospect is probably not interested. The coach then can either go on to the next prospect or change his recruiting philosophy. It also levels the playing field because it is very difficult to monitor this activity. If a private phone or drop phone is used, there is no way of tracking it. If the NCAA didn’t have to investigate improper phone calls, which are trivial offenses, it could spend more time on investigating real rule breakers. Fellow co-host of Ron Zook, Brian Jones had a funny take on the issue too: “It sounds like dating… For a 17- or 18-year old kid, I think it’s an easier way for them to say, ‘No, I’m not interested in your institution’ by not responding to the text message. Now if (the coach) just bombards the kid, that’s on him. I like that (idea). Deregulate it.” Listen to my Illini and Northwestern reports every Tuesday morning at 10:30 A.M. on KOZN 1620 The Zone Omaha Paul M.
