Mike Smith is facing the biggest challenge of his six seasons as the Falcons' coach. The Falcons never lost back-to-back regular-season games during Smith's first five seasons. Suddenly, the Falcons have lost three straight games as they prepare for Sunday's visit from Tampa Bay. Matt Ryan and other players say it has been important to see Smith's demeanor remain steady during the crisis. ''Smitty, one thing about him in six years, he is consistent,'' Ryan said Wednesday. ''Day in and day out, he comes to work positive and ready to go. I think players appreciate that, respect that and I think feed off of that and understand he's taken this approach and we need to do the same. We need to come in here positive and upbeat and ready to work.'' The Falcons are 1-4 one year after playing in the NFC championship game. Injuries to key players have added significant difficulty to Smith's challenge. Julio Jones, who was the NFL'...

Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez says he wouldn’t think of ‘jumping ship’

The Falcons' 2013 campaign is circling the toilet and trade rumors have predictably popped up regarding tight end Tony Gonzalez. The future Hall of Famer, though, will have none of it. Speaking with the media Thursday, Gonzalez shot down any aforementioned speculation, claiming he's happy in Atlanta and would never think of "jumping ship." “I don’t know...

Off the collar: Atlanta Falcons need to right the ship

ATLANTA, GA- Coming off a much needed BYE week the Atlanta Falcons will look to reinvent the team and prevent another catastrophic losing streak. As coach Mike Smith referenced earlier this week, the Falcons have not been consistent from game to game. This goes in all aspects of the game: offense, defense, special teams, and coaching. Unfortunately, these questions were not answered...

The ailing Atlanta Falcons returned to practice Tuesday following their Week 6 bye but without some familiar faces Atlanta hoped to have back now. Wide receiver Roddy White and running back Steven Jackson were unable to participate in practice, reports D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Jackson attended the open portion of practice, but didn’t have his helmet...

Falcons have no update on Steven Jackson

Atlanta Falcons running back Steven Jackson hasn’t played since going down with a hamstring injury in Week 2. On Monday, it didn’t appear his return was any closer. Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com reports that Falcons head coach Mike Smith is still unsure about Jackson’s availability heading into the practice week. No update from Mike Smith Monday on whether Steven Jackson (hamstring...

Falcons dipping into WR reserves, without Jones, White

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. When the Falcons host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, their wide receivers will consist of one player living with his parents, another who could be and a third who often gets mixed up with the backup quarterback. Yes, that's newly signed Brian Robiskie, currently living with his parents, as his father, Terry, is the Falcons wide receiversassistant head...

Gonzalez victim of illegal tactics, inconsistent officiating

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- At times this season Falcons future hall of fame tight end Tony Gonzalez has had to contend with some new tactics -- some legal and some perhaps not -- and varying officiating standards, which appear to have left him befuddled at times as to what in fact the rules are.At the conclusion of the Falcons' season-opening 23-17 loss at New Orleans, Saints defenders...

Ryan, Snelling empathize with Schaub's early struggles

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. It's been a disappointing season for the Falcons, to put it mildly. But at least the Atlanta players haven't encountered ugly fan behavior. If an NFL player has been the poster child for falling victim to the beyond-the-pale ire of his hometown fans, it's Texans quarterback and former Falcons draftee Matt Schaub. A former Pro Bowler and AFC passing...

Tony Gonzalez Will Inherit Bigger Role in Week 7

SOURCE: Atlanta Journal-ConstitutionFantasy Spin:White (hamstring) technically hasn't been ruled out yet but even if he does play Sunday, he figures to be very limited. Falcons' offense still missing 3 injured starters

The Atlanta Falcons returned from their bye week Tuesday with big holes to fill on offense. Running back Steven Jackson was only an observer and wide receiver Roddy White and left tackle Sam Baker were not on the field for the portion of the practice open to reporters. White, already slowed by a right ankle sprain, left the Falcons' 30-28 loss to the New York Jets on Oct. 7...

Tony Gonzalez Says He Won’t Ask for Trade No Matter How Bad Falcons Are This Season

Tony Gonzalez returned to football this season in hopes of winning a Super Bowl title. That goal now seems fairly unlikely. After coming within a few yards of a Super Bowl berth last season, the Atlanta Falcons started this year just 1-4 and have already lost a few key players, including wide receiver Julio Jones, for the season. Nevermind their Super Bowl hopes, now the Falcons...

Buccaneers-Falcons Preview

The Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had plenty of trouble staying healthy during their difficult starts to this season, but the Falcons suffered perhaps the most significant loss before their bye week. Atlanta won't have leading receiver Julio Jones available for the rest of the year, beginning with its attempt to keep the visiting Buccaneers winless Sunday. The...

Falcons Are Finished

Just one short week ago I was prepared to sit down and write a column for Pro Football Spot. It would have been my first column since joining the team, and I was planning to make the argument that hope was not lost for the 1-3 Atlanta Falcons.Going into it, I felt like my argument was pretty solid.Remaining on the schedule were the Buccaneers twice, the Panthers twice, the Cardinals...
