It took a few big saves from goaltender Jhonas Enroth, who made 26 saves total, but the Buffalo Sabres’ preseason success continued on Wednesday night as they topped the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-0 at First Niagara Center.
The improved the Sabres to 4-1-1 on the preseason with just one game left to play.
Ville Leino opened the scoring for the Sabres in the second period when he put home a rebound on a delayed penalty. That goal was all Buffalo needed to get the win, but that didn’t stop them from getting two more as Mikhail Grigorenko and Zemgus Girgensons each netted third period goals to put the game out of reach.
Speaking of Grigorenko and Girgensons, the 2012 draft mates were line mates in this game and put on a performance that could lead to more opportunities to play together more times this season.
The two young forwards seemed to know where each other was at all times on the ice, and showed a bit of chemistry that could become a building block for success in the future. Their enjoyment of playing together, and respect for one another, showed throughout the night. No moment more than on Girgensons empty-net goal to ice the game.
Girgensons set Grigorenko up with the open look at the net, but instead of taking it himself, Grigorenko gave it right back to Girgensons to allow him to put it into the empty net. It’s a nice look into the future of the Buffalo Sabres that could become very bright, very fast.
Buffalo closes out the preseason on Friday night against Carolina before the team opens the regular season a week from tonight against Detroit.
