Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie watched safety Charles Woodson operate on the field while working in the Green Bay Packers front office. He has said many times how much he admires the veteran, and who would be better than Woodson to shore up a newly patched together Raiders secondary? Woodson was selected by the Raiders with the fourth pick in the first round of the 1998 NFL Draft, and in his first season with Oakland, Woodson was selected as the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year by the Associated Press. He spent eight years in Oakland until signing a seven-year, $52 million contract with the Green Bay Packers in 2006. Woodson went on to become a leader for the Packers, as he was for the Raiders, and experienced winning a Super Bowl with the team in 2010. However, everything comes to an end and for Woodson, on February 15, 2013, the Packers released him. Woodson initially said he wanted to play for a team in contention for a Super Bowl, but the money wasn’t right as many NFL veterans of high quality ilk are struggling to hitch to a contending team. He now says if he has to go to a rebuilding effort, he is more than game and who better than his former team the Raiders. The GM admires him, the fasn would welcome him back with open arms, and he would get a chance to do something that was left on the table in 2006, helping Oakland back to the playoffs. "When this process first started out, that was my thing -- I needed to go to a contender," Woodson said, via Paul Gutierrez of CSNBayArea.com. "I know I am towards the end of my career. At this point, I want to play football. So if it is a rebuilding stage, at this point if that is the circumstances I have to play under, then that is what I am going to do." "It is kind of the process, but at the same time it is frustrating," Woodson said. "You have guys that can flat out play football. You look at Dwight Freeney and what he is able to do. (Indianapolis) had a system last year that is different than he is used to playing, but he can play football. John Abraham, he led his (Atlanta) team in sacks and you say, 'We don’t have a spot for you on our roster?' I can’t understand that.
