Luke Scott set a Tampa Bay Rays franchise record for futility Thursday.

Scott had three more hitless at-bats, running his streak to 0-for-39. The franchise record of 0-for-37 had been set by Jose Cruz Jr. in 2004.

"It's humbling and it's very difficult," Scott said. "It's caused me a lot of sleepless nights and a lot of tears. It really does hurt. It's cut my heart in two."

Manager Joe Maddon tried what he could to help, giving the usual designated hitter his first start of the season at first base, with the idea that he would feel like "more of a complete ballplayer."

It didn't make a difference, as Scott grounded out in the second to tie the team mark, then popped out to the catcher in the fourth to set it. He flied to right in the seventh before he was subbed out of the game, which the Rays lost 3-1 to the Indians.

"He's going to keep going out there," Maddon said. "It's going to turn. And when it does turn, there's going to be a lot of positives coming our way."

The all-time record for consecutive hitless at-bats by a non-pitcher is 46 at-bats, set by the Eugenio Velez. His skid began with the Giants in 2010 and continued with the Dodgers through the end of 2011. Velez's major league streak is technically still active, as the utility man is playing for the Cardinals' Class AAA Memphis affiliate this year.
