The Leadoff: Bob Howry retires
Chicago Cubs reliever Bob Howry has retired after 13 seasons. For most people this is irrelvant news, but for anybody that has ever played the now defunct trading card game, MLB Showdown, Bob Howry is legendary. (Ignore these next few sentences if you have never played MLB Showdown) Bob Howry's 2002 card was a staple for any MLB Shodown team's bullpen. At control 5 and an ridiculously cheap 10 point value, Howry completed every team's pitching staff.
There must be one or two of our readers out there that has played MLB Showdown and knows the significance of Bob Howry. For those that have never played the game as seriously as my friends and I, Bob Howry is just another MLB journeyman. MLB Showdown unfortunately stopped producing cards after the 2005 season, and my memories of playing the game with my friends have faded. However, every once in awhile, I hear a baseball player's name and can immediately recite their MLB Showdown card stats.
Bob Howry was one of those guys. Good luck Bob in your post-baseball life and thanks for being one of my favorite baseball cards of all time.
