The girlfriend of Semyon Varlamov, starting goaltender for the Colorado Avalanche, told Denver police he kicked her, knocked her down, dragged her by her hair and told her in Russian that "if this were Russia, he would have beat her more," according to police and court documents released Thursday. Varlamov appeared in court in Denver on Thursday morning on kidnapping and assault charges related to the case, which the woman said happened Monday at their apartment in the 1700 block of Bassett Street. Varlamov surrendered to Denver police Wednesday evening and spent the night in jail. He came to court Thursday morning in a yellow jumpsuit. The judge set his bond at $5,000. Varlamov was given permission to travel, and a restraining order was imposed. His girlfriend, whose name is redacted from police reports, said Varlamov kicked her in the chest and knocked her down, then stomped on her while she was on the ground. He grabbed her by the hair and dragged her out of her bedroom and held her face to the floor, according to the affidavit and arrest warrant. He also grabbed her by her arms and shook her and pushed her down again, she told police. "Her statement is that this is the most minor of the beatings she received. She's received five in all, and the last one was to unconsciousness," said Robert Abrams, an attorney who is representing Varlamov's girlfriend. He said the woman spent five hours in a hospital getting exams and X-rays. His client has been dating Varlamov off and on for four years. She lives in Russia where she is from but travels to live with him. She had just begun a three-month stay in Denver, Abrams said. He said he would try to keep her here so she can testify against Varlamov but added, "I've got her in hiding." The woman only speaks Russian, so after the incident she called Abrams' fiancee, Diana Senova, who is Lithuanian and speaks the language.
