Defenseman Nick Jensen has opted to skip his senior season at St. Cloud State to join the Detroit Red Wings franchise. The team made the announcement official on Thursday: Wings sign defenseman Nick Jensen to a two-year entry-level deal with the club — Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings) May 2, 2013 Jensen was the Wings’ fifth-round pick (No. 150 overall) back in 2009, then went on to three impressive years with the Huskies. He finished this past season with 31 points (4 goals, 27 assists), while helping to lead St. Cloud State to its first-ever Frozen Four appearance. Unlike Danny DeKeyser, who jumped right to Detroit after signing with the Wings, Jensen’s likely slotted for a start in the minors. Grand Rapids is still in the midst of its playoff run, so it’s possible Jensen could at least pick up some practice time before the year’s out. More on Jensen here from Red Wings Central.

Howard must stand tall

For the Red Wings to advance in these Stanley Cup playoffs, goalie Jimmy Howard must be better. Especially now that rookie defenseman Danny DeKeyser is out for the year with a broken thumb. Since his arrival late in the regular season, DeKeyser has stabilized the defense, and his loss will be difficult for the Wings to overcome, unless Howard elevates his game. Leading 4-1 nearly...
