Alex Stalock will start an NHL game in the very near future for the San Jose Sharks. Really, he will. The backup goaltender to Antti Niemi has been patiently waiting his turn to see some actual game action, and it will very likely come this weekend when the Sharks have their first back-to-back situation of the season. San Jose visits the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST, and Ottawa Senators less than 24 hours later on Sunday at 5 p.m. EST/2 p.m. PST. Niemi is the only NHL goaltender this season that has played every minute of every game for his team, and he’s posted impressive numbers in the process. He’s tied for the league lead with eight wins, has a 1.67 goals-against average (fourth among goalies that have played at least four games), and .927 save percentage. He looks just like the goaltender that was a Vezina Trophy finalist for the first time in his career last season. But, the Sharks will need Stalock to start at least eight to 10 games, provided N...

Travis Yost: G11: Sharks @ Senators

Ottawa, for whatever reason, has struggled quite a bit against the Californian teams to start the season. They'll have another crack at one on Sunday afternoon, when the red-hot San Jose Sharks storm into town for their second meeting of the year. San Jose (9-1-1), right now, is the best the National Hockey League has to offer. A top-to-bottom orchestra of stifling puck-possession...

Sharks get first regulation loss after last-second goal (Video)

The Sharks’ first regulation loss of the season was a heartbreaker. The Sharks looked to be headed to overtime, and thus keeping their point streak alive to start the season, against the Bruins on Thursday. Then David Krejci had to go and be a hero: Ugh. With 0.8 seconds left in the game. Literally a last-second goal. The Sharks feverishly outshot the Bruins, 39-16, before Krejci...

San Jose Sharks beat Ottawa Senators 5-2

Backup goalie Alex Stalock had to wait a long time for his first NHL start, in more ways than one. And after it ended Sunday with a surprisingly strong 5-2 Sharks victory over the Ottawa Senators, Stalock made it pretty clear it was all worth it. "It's the end of a road trip, and it was going to be a good road trip even if, say, we didn't win. But it was a great finish...

Sharks Dan Boyle: Lapierre's hit showed lack of respect

Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle finally opened up Saturday about the hit from St. Louis Blues forward Maxim Lapierre that knocked him unconscious. "I don't think he thought he was going to put me in the hospital with the hit, so I agree with him that wasn't his intention," said Boyle, who had declined to talk about the play for two days. "At the same time, we...

Sharks bounce back, blank Canadiens 2-0

The question has come up at every stop on the Sharks' extended trip: How is this year's hot start different from last year's? Well, here's one way: Saturday night at the Bell Center, San Jose bounced back from its first regulation loss of the season with a 2-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. A year ago, the Sharks needed seven games to pick up two points in...

Evening Line

Probably the shortest evening line I have done... "We want to go after teams, we want to smother teams." -Joe Thornton of the San Jose Sharks.  Much more on San Jose from Nicholas J. Cotsonika of Yahoo.

Sharks-Canadiens Preview

The San Jose Sharks got off to the NHL's best start behind a high-powered offense, but goals have been hard to come by on the first two stops of a long trip. They'll try to re-ignite their scoring Saturday night against the Montreal Canadiens, who are 10-2-0 with two ties in the all-time series at home while limiting the Sharks to 1.8 goals per game. San Jose (8-1-1) was...

Sharks-Senators Preview

While trying to get the NHL's most potent offense back on track, the San Jose Sharks found a way to pull out another close victory on their lengthy road trip. San Jose also should be feeling good about the possible return of Dan Boyle on Sunday night when it looks to beat the Ottawa Senators for the seventh time in eight meetings. Although they lead the league with 3.8 goals...
