The opening of NBA free agency may have commanded most of the sports world's attention in the wee hours Monday morning, but the biggest trade of the day wasn't made in the NBA, but rather, at the college level. In a blockbuster swap, Stanford University and Syracuse University agreed to a deal that would send the rights to Stanford's " @SUAthletics " Twitter handle to the Orange in exchange for a collection of local goods to be named later. One of the items is reportedly a case of oranges, and it would not be a surprise to see a batch of salt potatoes and a Dinosaur Bar-B-Que thrown in, as well. The rise of up-and-coming Stanford's " @GoStanford " Twitter handle reportedly made @SUAthletics expendable, though the handle's contributions to the program were not overlooked. "We held both accounts – the social media equivalent to having two starting quarterbacks, and we wanted to derive as much value fun as possible," Bernard Muir, Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics at Stanford, said in a statement . "We expect great things from our new starter, @GoStanford, and wish @SUAthletics good luck in a new home." It is unclear what Syracuse has planned for its new acquisition, as it already maintains a successful Twitter account, " @Cuse ." The school did, however, shine some light on the decision to acquire the capable backup in @SUAthletics. While the trade gives Syracuse Athletics control of @suathletics , we have no plans to switch our primary handle Twitter handle ( @cuse ) at... -- Syracuse Athletics (@Cuse) July 1, 2013 @tjbasalla We are not sure what we will do with @suathletics but we didn't want anyone else to grab it after Stanford was done with it. -- Syracuse Athletics (@Cuse) July 1, 2013 The NCAA has not commented on the trade.
