Plaxico Burress started his NFL career as a Pittsburgh Steeler and after playing in New York for both the Giants and Jets, Burress is now back with the Steelers. His career might be over after his recent injury to his shoulder. He will have surgery on Monday to repair the damage that was caused, but right now he is out indefinitely. ESPN and NFL.com reported Burress has a torn rotator cuff.
Coach Mike Tomlin said that the injury to Burress’ shoulder was serious. If the reports from NFL.com and ESPN are true, Plaxico’s career could be in jeopardy. Burress landed awkwardly while trying to catch a pass as cornerback Da’Mon Cromartie-Smith was defending him in practice. This happened towards the end of last week’s practice. Burress, who is old by NFL standards at age 35, was in tremendous pain after the play.
After he got help up from the staff, Plaxico was taken off the field. As he left the practice facility he was wearing a sling over his right shoulder late Thursday evening. Coach Tomlin and his staff was looking to use Burress as a big target for reaching paydirt this season. With Mike Wallace gone, Burress was going to look as the deep threat.
Not only is Wallace gone to Miami, but another key offensive member is out due to injury. The ever reliable tight end Heath Miller is currently rehabbing from knee surgery. Even though Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders were the two main wide outs for the Steelers, Burress was vying for the third receiver for Pittsburgh.
Tomlin will now look to Jerricho Cotchery, David Gilreath and rookies Markus Wheaton and Justin Brown as potential the third main receiver.
