Marshall McFadden went undrafted out of South Caroina State in 2011, but he stuck with his NFL dreams and was signed by the Steelers to a reserve/futures contract earlier this year. McFadden was cut on the final day of roster moves and signed the following day to the team’s practice squad where he has been since the beginning of the regular season.
Today, however, McFadden’s NFL hopes and dreams have come true as the Steelers have added McFadden to the active roster by promoting him to from the practice squad. He will take the spot of the injured Chris Carter, who has been placed on season ending injured reserve with an abdominal injury.
During the pre-season Carter won the starting outside linebacker spot opposite LaMarr Woodley. When Jason Worilds and James Harrison were back from injury, however, Carter saw much less playing time on defense, but remained a consistent player on special teams. That is where McFadden will likely see his only playing time now that he has been called up.
It is unlikely that McFadden will see any time on the field on defense here on out, but he could be on the active roster and may see playing time on special teams in the spot formerly taken by Carter.
This could mark the second straight week the Steelers have promoted a player from their practice squad and started them on special teams. On Monday Night against the Chiefs the Steelers used David Gilreath as their return man; a position he may play again on Sunday Night against the Ravens if Chris Rainey and Antonio Brown are not ready and back from injury.
