Liverpool's senior internationals endured a frustrating night on Tuesday, with rain preventing LFC's England trio from playing and several others experiencing defeat. Steven Gerrard was all set to captain and make his 99th international appearance for England in their World Cup qualifier against Poland in Warsaw, but the match was postponed due to heavy rain. A waterlogged pitch forced the match to be delayed until Wednesday, when defender Glen Johnson and Jonjo Shelvey will also hope to be involved. Daniel Agger was captain for Denmark in their Brazil 2014 qualifier with Italy at the San Siro, but the defender who recently extended his contract at Anfield could not prevent his team losing 3-1. His Reds centre-back partner Martin Skrtel was also in action and wearing the armband, with Slovakia hosting Greece in Group G. Skrtel fared no better, though, with the home side losing 1-0. Nuri Sahin completed the whole match for Turkey in its qualifier with Hungary in Budapest, but the midfielder could not prevent his nation from suffering a 3-1 defeat. Joe Allen played the full match as Wales were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Croatia in Group A. The Welsh have now lost three of their four matches in the section. Luis Suarez smashed home another free-kick but the Uruguayan was on the receiving end of a loss too, as La Celeste were summarily beaten 4-1 by Bolivia at high altitude in La Paz. Goalkeepers Brad Jones and Pepe Reina were both part of their country's squads but each remained on the bench for Australia's meeting with Iraq and Spain's heavyweight clash against France respectively. Jordan Henderson was skipper as England U-21s booked their place at next year's European U-21 Championship with a 1-0 victory in Serbia. The midfielder played the full 90 minutes, while Raheem Sterling was introduced for the remaining quarter-hour as the Three Lions progressed to the finals in Israel. Samed Yesil was on target yet again, continuing his phenomenal record at youth level, and played the whole match for Germany U-19s during their 2-2 draw with Republic of Ireland. Two consecutive 5-0 victories, over FYR Macedonia and Luxembourg, had already assured the Germans of a spot in the Elite Round stage of the European U-19 Championship.
