Jameson Taillon and Team Canada took on the Milwaukee Brewers today in a tune-up game for the World Baseball Classic. Taillon started the game, and looked good early, but couldn’t make it through three full innings. He final line was 2.2 IP, allowing two runs on four hits, two walks and a hit batter. He struck out two hitters. Through two innings, facing a lineup that included Rickie Weeks, Carlos Gomez and Norichika Aoki, Taillon didn’t allow a hit. He also recorded two outs in the third inning before giving up four straight hits which finished his day. Canada ended up winning the game 7-4. After the game, Taillon told reporters that “It obviously wasn’t my best outing. I would’ve liked to get better results, but as far as getting out there, getting to my pitch count, almost getting through three, that is big.” Taillon will start on Sunday afternoon against Team USA. He will be on a 65 pitch count limit, which will increase to 80 if Canada advances to the second round.

Bucs blast Spain, Taillon faces Brewers

The Pirates rolled to a 10-0 victory over Spain’s World Baseball Classic team on Tuesday. Spain’s lineup didn’t have any major leaguers in it, but Gerrit Cole‘s performance was still notable. Cole struck out the first six batters he faced and ended up going three strong innings. Gaby Sanchez also homered for the Bucs, continuing his hot spring. Over in Arizona, Jameson Taillon...

30 Prospects in 30 Days: Jameson Taillon – SP – Pittsburgh Pirates

Jameson Taillon is a 6-foot-6, 225-pound right-handed beast of a pitching prospect. Drafted second overall out of high school in 2010, Taillon, 21, isn’t as polished as fellow Pittsburgh pitching prospect Gerrit Cole, but he still offers tremendous upside as a future major-league starter. Pirates Notebook: Gerrit Cole Dominates, But Don’t Expect Him To Make the Team

Gerrit Cole struck out six in three shutout innings today. Gerrit Cole didn’t have much trouble taking on Spain. The right-hander threw three shutout innings in his second Spring Training appearance, giving up two hits, walking one, and striking out six. He was sitting 94-97 MPH, and throwing mostly fastballs. He didn’t need anything else. “He was focused. He went out there...

Gerrit Cole Named One of Baseball America’s Top 20 Rookies For 2013

There are two types of lists that usually come out this time of year. The prospect lists focus on the future and the upside of each player. Then there’s the lists that focus only on the impact prospects can make in the upcoming season. Baseball America released one of those lists today, looking at the top 20 rookies for the 2013 season. The list is ranked based on the impact the...

Gaby Sanchez leads Pirates to win over Spain

Gaby Sanchez went 3 for 3 with a double, home run and two RBIs on Tuesday, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 10-0 rout of Spain's World Baseball Classic team. Rhiner Cruz, a Houston Astros reliever and one of just two players with major league experience on the Spanish roster, allowed three runs in one inning. The right-handed hitting Sanchez will likely platoon at first...

You may say I'm a dreamer: 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates

What else can baseball fans do in January but dream of October? In You May Say I'm a Dreamer, the Outside Corner staff will imagine the route to a World Series in 2013 title for all 30 teams. The streak is over, and not only are the Pirates a winning team, they are the champions of baseball. Their championship run was truly a team effort, but if you could point to one player...

First Pitch: Some Early Thoughts From Big League Camp

A lot can happen in the next three and a half weeks to shape up the Opening Day roster. We’ve only seen a small sample size from each player here, and while some players are standing out, it’s important to keep that perspective about the lack of playing time. That said, here are some of my thoughts on the early part of camp, all coming with the disclaimer that it’s still early...

This is my nightmare: Pittsburgh Pirates

In the This Is My Nightmare series, we'll take a look at what the absolute worst case scenario for each team would be in 2013. Think of it as the negative complement to our You May Say I'm A Dreamer series that we'll be running during our preview series. Nightmares can come in many different forms. For most of the teams that we've been covering in these series...

First Pitch: Something, Something, Cliché

I love cities with a grid system. It makes driving simple. Bradenton doesn’t have a true grid system, but it’s to the point where I’ve been here a week, and I’m already to that point where you drive from home to work without really focusing on where to turn or what street to take. There are some strange things about the layout. For example, you can’t just drive down 17th...

Roster Watch: Charlie Morton

When thinking about Charlie Morton the first thing that generally comes to mind is “Electric Stuff”.  Either that or his other nickname “Ground Chuck”.  Very endearing stuff. What often is overlooked is the fact that Charlie Morton‘s mental toughness has been questioned.  Is he strong enough mentally to do this?  No one really knows for…

Wednesday notes: Bucs bash Sox

The Pirates pounded the Red Sox 9-3 on Wednesday, although it may have felt kind of like a scrimmage with so many former Bucs on the field for Boston. Brock Holt, Drew Sutton, Pedro Ciriaco and David Ross saw action for the Sox. Jeff Locke pitched pretty well. He went four innings and allowed one run on three hits and two walks. The lefty struck out two and appears to be inching...

Draft Prospect Watch: Week Three Recap

The third weekend of the college baseball season has come to a close and we saw some power from one of the top draft-eligible third basemen on Friday and Sunday. Mark Appel showed why he will likely go well before the Pirates make their first selection with the 9th overall pick, and then select again with the 14th pick. The two third baseman we are following closely, Kris Bryant...
