Former University of Tennessee legendary head football coach Phillip Fulmer announced that he plans to help assist with the rebuilding of the East Tennessee State University football program at a press conference on Tuesday. ETSU had an 80-year history before the program was disbanded following the 2003 season. The school’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Richard Sander announced that Fulmer will serve as a consultant and special assistant to the athletic director. Fulmer was the head coach at Tennessee from 1992 to 2008 and ended his coaching career with a 152-52 record. He won the 1998 national championship at Tennessee when the team went a perfect 13-0. With the Vols football program, Fulmer also won two SEC titles and seven SEC Eastern Division titles. The former Tennessee head coach was also recently inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in May of 2012. Fulmer expressed his excitement to help rebuild ETSU’s football program at the school’s press conference. “I am extremely impressed with Dr. Noland’s passion to build upon and enhance the culture of excellence at ETSU. Dr. Noland and Dr. Sander both believe and understand that sports, and in this case football, is important to both the students and the alumni of a university. It can help them enjoy and enhance the college experience, as well as stay connected for years to come,” Fulmer said. ETSU’s football program will return in 2015.
