In one of the biggest moves this offseason, Anaheim traded Bobby Ryan to the Ottawa Senators in the middle of the free agent frenzy on July 5th.  After the dust has settled, it’s time to decide not who won the trade, but rather assess how much of an impact Ryan had as a Duck. After signing both Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry to monster extensions, it was nearly guaranteed that Ryan would have to find somewhere else to play. General Manager Bob Murray decided that Ryan did not offer as much to the team as the two Canadians did and acted accordingly. However, numbers would suggest otherwise. Start off by looking at the age of all three players. Perry and Getzlaf are both 28, while Ryan is just 26. On one hand, that means that Perry and Getzlaf are better established and are less of a gamble with money. That would hold true if Ryan was not already equally impressive. Take a look at each player’s career paths. It took Corey Perry four seasons to reach the 30 goal and 70 point mark. The American Bobby Ryan needed only three seasons in the big leagues to accomplish this same feat. Advantage Ryan. Getzlaf takes the cake for quickest NHL start, registering over 80 points in his third NHL season. Where Ryan has a knock on the centerman in games played. Ryan missed just three games over the last four seasons, including the over scheduled 2013 campaign. In the last three full seasons, Getzlaf has played under 70 games, twice. Nobody wants to pay a player big money to sit in the team box watching the action. A recap of what is established thus far: Bobby Ryan plays more games than Ryan Getzlaf and has shown more promise than Corey Perry. Let’s continue to the best breakdown of sports, sabermetrics. The geniuses at hockeyreference.com track stats on every NHL player down to who he spends the most time on the ice with. My personal favorite formula takes a player’s previous seasons and assigns a value to how good the season was by assessing shots, goals, blocks, assists, and other measurements. Then they can compare those values to other players who had similar tracks. For Ryan, he has played six seasons, although not all complete seasons, in the league. Joe Sakic, in his first six seasons, is an 88 percent match compared to Ryan. For those who aren’t stat geeks, an 88 percent match is pretty darn good. Oh, and that Sakic guy knows his way around a rink too. It’s safe to say Ryan has done well for himself thus far. In the 2010-2011 season, he was third in even strength goals. He followed that up by placing seventh the next year. Not too shabby for a guy that was judged to not even be the third best forward on his team. Now I have no qualifications to be any type of NHL executive, let alone a GM, but I would guess the public doesn’t know the whole story because the numbers say Ryan should have stayed. According to behindthenet.ca, Ryan drew a penalty for every sixty minutes he was on the ice. He only took a penalty in every 120 minutes of ice time — another statistic that helps a team out, particularly when your team has a top five-powerplay unit. Anaheim will miss him, especially when Teemu Selanne retires (he has to eventually, right?). The Ducks hope Getzlaf and Perry make them look smart, and I’m sure both will play well and produce, just not at the same clip of Bobby Ryan. -Miller
