As the world was moving into the new millennium, Jeter’s world couldn’t have been better. The 2000 All-Star MVP. The 2000 World Series MVP. The team that he would eventually captain, the New York Yankees, had just won its fourth title in five years. Fame, baseball’s highest honors, starlets… all came to Jeter with ease. Then the money came as well. At the conclusion of the 2000 season, Jeter signed a 10-year deal that would pay out $189 million over the life of the contract. Jeter had it all, but the contract would change and influence perceptions and attitudes over the next decade.

Fans of the Yankees’ opponents were of course the first to take shots. “Overrated”, “overpaid”, “any shortstop could win with those teams”… those were the usual comments. But then someone close to him took swings at Jeter as well. Of course I’m referring to the highly publicized Esquire magazine article, in which Alex Rodriguez questioned Jeter’s ability and minimized his value.
