Buzzer beaters have been overdone as of late, but this game winner by Khalil Edney of New Rochelle in the Section 1 Class AA championship game against Mt. Vernon is just so incredibly fantastic that it’d be a crime against humanity if it wasn’t shared with the masses.
New Rochelle had possession of the ball out of bounds, down 60-58 with 2.9 seconds left after a terrific 9-1 run. The inbounds pass attempt by New Rochelle was intercepted by Mt. Vernon, thus ending their chance at a last second shot.
Or so it seemed.
For some inexplicable reason the Mt. Vernon player who ended up with the ball tossed it up in the air in a vain attempt to run out the clock. Edney grabbed the ball out of midair and threw up the most miraculous buzzer beater ever with 0.1 seconds left on the clock. After some deliberation from the refs, the basket counted (it’s difficult to make out, but the ball is out of Edney’s hands in the photo), capping off New Rochelle’s improbable 61-60 comeback with a shot that was nothing short of magic.
While you can’t help but revel in Khalil Edney and his New Rochelle mates’ stunning victory, it’s absolutely heartbreaking to see Mt. Vernon have their championship dreams squashed with a mere 0.1 seconds left in the game. Unfortunately for Mt. Vernon the basketball gods favored New Rochelle this time around.
