Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots is accusing the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, of stealing his Super Bowl ring from 2004. His side of the story claims that he was showing the ostentatious ring to the man who once stubbornly controlled the other side of the Iron Curtain. There is also the claim that he was advised (warned) by the Bush White House that "It would really be in the best interest of U.S.-Soviet relations if you meant to give the ring as a present." This, according to an article by Around the League Writer Marc Sessler which barely scratches the surface of the story that originally broke in June of '05 on Boston.com sports, followed the incident that Kraft claims robbed him of his treasure. My first question is: can't Mr. Kraft just ask for another one to made for him? And where was the concern for the problem eight years ago?I hope that the Kraft family is not just looking for a sensational story. It would be a shame to place unwarranted stigma on the actions of a government with whom we are supposed to have forged an alliance since then.I also hope that this is not the desperate attempt of a sports writer to dredge up more controversy in a sport that is on the verge of imploding from DUIs, illegal performance enhancing drug use, suspensions, arrests, jail sentences and other various and sundry issues not related to playing football.Even if there was some plot by the Russians to deprive Robert Kraft of his precious ring, is it really worth digging up the past to attempt a coup of a piece of jewelry?I understand the symbolism of the ring, so have another one made; I'm sure the jeweler still has the template of the original. None of us would have been the wiser seeing a mere copy on the hand of the owner of one of the most successful organizations in sports in the last decade and a half!Let's stick to football and leave politics to the professionals.
