On Tuesday, it was reported that St. Louis Cardinals’ first round pick Marco Gonzales signed his professional contract. Gonzales is a left-handed pitcher out of Gonzaga University. This has not been confirmed by the St. Louis Cardinals yet. Jim Callis of Baseball America tweeted out that Gonzales signed for 1.85 million dollars. The recommended slot value for Gonzales’ spot at pick 19 was 2.056 million. The Cardinals saved roughly 200,000 with the Gonzales signing. This savings is a little more than I thought they would be able to save. I figured Gonzales would go for slot to maybe a little under. The savings will be huge. So what can the Cardinals do with the Gonzales savings? They should be able to save more money with later round picks. The Cardinals took four college seniors in the first 10 rounds: Mason Katz of LSU, Jimmy Reed of Maryland, Andrew Pierce of Southern Mississippi, and Nick Petree of Missouri State. If we combine those savings, the Cards should be able to get 2nd round pick Oscar Mercado and a couple of other higher upside picks. Oscar Mercado is going to take more than the recommended slot value to sign. A couple of months ago, Mercado was a projected mid-first round pick. I think it will take first round money to sign him and the Cards should have it. There are a couple of later round guys the Cardinals are hoping to sign. They have already signed 7th rounder Chris Rivera out of a California high school. Rivera’s bonus has not been announced yet but I would imagine it is over the 170,300 recommended bonus. Malik Collymore, the 10th rounder, is a Mizzou commit and should require over slot money to sign. Here is the updated 10-round slot amounts with confirmed signs.
