The eighth of ten playoff teams has been decided, and it's a familiar face: the Detroit Tigers. Detroit won their third straight AL Central crown on Wednesday night after beating the Twins 1-0 as Max Scherzer let a first inning run stand up thanks to a solid pitching performance against Minnesota. With a record of 93-66 with six games to play, the Tigers still have a solid chance at hosting an ALDS matchup. The Tigers are two games behind the Red Sox for the AL's top seed, and one game back of the A's for the second seed. Last year, Detroit and Oakland faced off in the ALDS, and the Tigers prevailed in five games, winning the first two games at Comerica Park before losing two in a row in the O.co Coliseum before winning Game 5. The final two AL playoff spots are down to four teams: the Rays, Indians, Rangers, and Royals. Kansas City can actually be eliminated tonight, depending on the outcome of their game with the Mariners, while the Rangers will go into the fin...

Max Scherzer Celebrates as Only He Can After Helping Detroit Tigers Clinch

The Detroit Tigers’ division-clinching victory felt like it was somewhat destined to happen Wednesday, with 20-game winner Max Scherzer on the mound. He’s a 21-game winner now, and the Tigers are the three-time defending AL Central champions after a 1-0 victory over the Twins. Despite struggling with his control from the outset, Scherzer tossed seven shutout innings of two-hit...

Miami Marlins: series preview vs. Tigers

Anibal Sanchez will face his former team for the first time in Miami. (Photo: ChicagoNow.com) The Miami Marlins will conclude the regular season with a three-game series at home against the American League Central champions and reigning American League champion, Detroit Tigers. Miami recently took two of three from the Philadelphia Phillies in a series that saw Marlins’ closer...

Rondon could play major role for Tigers in postseason

Bruce Rondon started the season in the minor leagues but it appears he could play a major role for the Tigers in the postseason. With their 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins Tuesday night, the Tigers clinched a playoff berth but the division-clinching celebration will have to wait. Everyone knows the bullpen givens in closer Joaquin Benoit, set-up man Jose Veras, left-hander...

Jim Leyland cries, moonwalks while celebrating Tigers division title (Video)

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland went through a complete range of emotions during the team's celebration of their third straight American League Central division title after Wednesday night's victory over the Minnesota Twins, highlighted by a little crying and a little moonwalk. Video: Leyland shows emotions and dance moves Leyland began crying during a postgame...

Game 2013.158: Tigers at Twins

91 – 66, 2. Not much to like about yesterday’s game. Even though JV went 6 with 0 ER and 12 Ks, he walked 3 and got in enough trouble to not pitch into the 7th. I don’t have the numbers in front of me, but I’m certain that the bullpen has pitched significantly more innings in JV starts this year than in any year in recent history. I recognize that the Tigers have been pretty...

Game 2013.160: Tigers at Marlins

93-66, 2013 AL Central Division Champions. No small sigh of relief there. Wednesday, the Tigers clinched with a gutsy 1-0 win over the Twins. Couldn’t watch (I was sick, still am), but I’ll catch up with it after the postseason, no doubt. Must have been the nail-biter of the season. They really had us going there, didn’t they? I can’t be the only one who had “collapse...

Tigers clinch American League playoff berth

MINNEAPOLIS -- Torii Hunter couldn't help but peek at the out-of-town scoreboard at Target Field, glancing toward the LED board in right-center field. When Cleveland trailed Chicago by a run in the bottom of the ninth, the Tigers outfielder felt his team had a chance to clinch the American League Central on Tuesday night with a win over Minnesota. Not long after, the score in...

Jhonny Peralta rejoining Tigers on Friday -- as a left fielder

They need his power in the bottom half of the lineup. They need his bat. So the Tigers are bringing Jhonny Peralta back for the final three games of the season and probably for the postseason as well. But they’re bringing him back as a left-fielder not as a shortstop. Creating roster room for Peralta by transferring infielder Danny Worth to the 60-day disabled list Tigers president...

Scherzer helps Tigers clinch Central

Max Scherzer earned his 21st win and the Detroit Tigers clinched their third straight AL Central title, beating the Minnesota Twins 1-0 on Wednesday night.

Tigers Jhonny Peralta reinstated from suspension

The Detroit Tigers activated Jhonny Peralta from the restricted list on Friday. Peralta was serving a 50-game suspension for his role with the Biogenesis scandal. The Tigers will use him over the final weekend and presumably on their National League Division Series roster. He’s been working out in left field and is expected to see time there, though he could also play some shortstop...

Game 2013.159: Tigers at Twins

92-66, 1. Since this won’t be my last post this season, I won’t feel bad about a short one on a busy day. You know that a win tonight, or a Cle loss, will clinch a third straight division title. That’s the first time since…ever. They did win three straight pennants from 1907-1909, but they have never won 3 straight division titles. Please keep that in mind as you shake up...

Tigers' Leyland, Dombrowski building impressive legacy together

They once worked in Miami where Detroit is playing this weekend and Jim Leyland and Dave Dombrowski did quite well there. They won a World Series in 1997 a neat feat they have been trying to replicate since each agreed to help steer the Tigers. A question fitting to ask as the Tigers prepare for a closing series against the Marlins ahead of their fourth playoff run in eight seasons...

Should MLB Teams Be Resting Players Before Playoffs?

With the final game of the regular season coming this Sunday, teams that have secured their play-off spot have to ask themselves a question. Should we rest our all-star players? The Boston Red Sox, Oakland A’s, Atlanta Braves, and the Los Angeles Dodgers are all asking themselves this question. Playing 162 games every year wears down even the toughest of athletes. Injuries compound...

Victory seals Tigers' third straight AL Central title

More than a century has passed since the Detroit Tigers celebrated a three-peat. But they did it in style Wednesday night, after beating the Minnesota Twins, 1-0, to claim a third consecutive American League Central Division crown. It's been 104 years since the Tigers made the playoffs in three straight seasons. Those Tigers (1907-09) won the American League pennant each year...
