It may not be the most box office lightweight title fight the UFC has ever arranged, but TJ Grant (pictured) will get next dibs at reigning 155-pound champ Benson Henderson, nonetheless. Grant solidified his status Saturday night by steamrolling former top contender Gray Maynard at UFC 160. “We’re looking at all these different fights and options and all these different things to do, I wanted to make sure that the next contender for the title was putting on great fights,” UFC president Dana White said at the post-fight press conference. “Obviously, Josh Thomson just had a great performance against [Nate] Diaz. I wanted to see something good tonight. I wanted to see something special, and I saw that tonight. [Grant's] getting the next title shot.” Now, we’ve heard White dub someone the division’s #1 contender in the past only to change course when a new flavor of the month popped up. However, White appeared set that Henderson vs. Grant was all but set in stone. Grant will be riding a five-fight winning streak into the biggest bout of his life. He’s finished off his last two victims in devastating (T)KO fashion. Henderson, meanwhile, has rattled off six consecutive victories en route to capturing the UFC crown. “Smooth’s” last three scraps have been of the title defense variety. White was unsure when and where Henderson vs. Grant would go down. He said it’s possible the 155-pound shootout could headline the launch of Fox Sports 1 on August 17.
