How the Mariners ended up with him:The Mariners acquired Johnson in a trade with the Montreal Expos in 1989. The Mariners sent Mark Langston and Mike Campbell to the Expos in exchange for Johnson.
Why we miss him:
The Big Unit was one of the most dominating pitchers in the game. He commands a powerful fastball that regularly hit 100 mph in his prime and a hard, cutting slider. Legend has it that his fastball is so fast that it can kill a bird in mid-air. He overpowered hitters with these pitches, and his stuff was complemented by his aggressive, intimidating appearance and demeanor, making him one of the most feared pitchers in the game.
Johnson’s 6-10 frame, wild mullet, and mustache, his angry and unpredictable temper, and his wild pitching style (3rd all time in hit batsmen) caused hitters to become timid and lose confidence. As a result, Johnson has won 5 Cy Young Awards, is second on the all-time strikeouts list, and reached 300 wins this season.
Where he is now:
After leaving the Mariners, the Big Unit played for the Astros, Diamondbacks, and Yankees. This season he is pitching for the San Francisco Giants on a one-year deal. He is 8-6 with a 4.81 ERA and 80 strikeouts.
